Dark pinup at the Umbrella Company!

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

It’s almost midnight and I’m sitting down to make a post before bed. It was a balls out Steemit day, guys. Start to finish, 12 hours of Steemit related work! Earlier this week I announced a Minneapolis Steemit-centric introduction film project in my blog “Steemit short film project this Friday, June 23rd open to ANYONE in Minneapolis!”. Today was the day and holy shit did we have a turn out! I shot introduction footage of @mada, @greatdabu, @lovejoy, @kooks88, @millsguthrie, @vermillionfox, @elderfinancial, @boxcar, @moony, @jezebel, @denno, @tarotbyfergus and myself! We even did a seriously gangster slow walk video I’ll be showing in a few days. The entire day was shot on an iPhone 7 Plus using an Osmo mobile gimbal bought entirely with STEEM rewards! I can’t wait to see how this turns out.

Tonight’s [late] post comes from a recent shoot I had in LA. I was working with Doris Mayday and the usual hair and make-up team. We needed a cool place to shoot and that’s always the hardest part of Los Angeles. Doris’ fiancée is a brilliant interior and set designer and had been working on readying a new bar in Hollywood for opening. It’s called Melrose Umbrella Company, and had a rich history in the facilities beginnings as an actual umbrella company. They kept much of the original wood and architecture and modified the manufacturing space in to an open bar area. For me, it couldn’t have been any better. It completely fit my style and esthetic.

At this point, I’d been working with Doris for years. We’d gotten incredibly use to our process of shooting and collaborating. She took the lead at times, finding unique poses as I’d direct her the rest of the way in to something just slightly further than her original idea. There was no end to the possibilities of photos we could make with the venue’s surroundings. I was able to shoot through old, original glass does and wrap Doris up in the original wooden chairs that were stacked high against the wall. I live for these kind of locations and to shoot it with a model as professional and talented as Doris was a true pleasure.

We wrapped in under two hours with several lingerie looks courtesy of What Katie Did who has sponsored my shoots since the first session I did with Doris in Los Angeles. Melrose Umbrella Company was an unbelievable place to shoot and a year later, I’d return to shoot the “Breathtakingly Beautiful” look book for Pinup Girl Clothing at the same location. I hope you enjoyed the editorial.

I wish I could take photos as good as you do.. Sexy as HELL!

Thank you @kaarel! Just 17 years of stubborn shooting until I found my style.

Oh wow 17 years! Much respect for the dedication!

What an Awsome day it was! Thank you for getting it all together. It was such a fun time getting to know everyone and chat about Steemit and assortment of other things. I am greatly looking forward to the video and hopefully a dope release at the July meetup. Pictures are looking great in your post here as well. Big fan of how her hair color ties in so well with the background, give me a real natural feeling, like she is supposed to be there. Pumped to see more from you!

Thanks @elderfinancial! Yeah, that was such a fun day. I'm still kind of recovering from it. I had to do a few reshoots yesterday. It was great meeting you as well! I'll see you at @timcliff's Meetup in July!

Upvote and a follow for you! Love these! The highlights and shadows are perfect!

Same here, I agree

Thanks @joviandres! Yeah. One thing that I feel makes my photography unique is the willingness to allow so many shadows to surround the model.

I am waiting for this film!

Yeah! I have all the video shot and compiled. Just looking for a day or two I can make the time to cut it all together, but it's going to be hilarious @dlina-v-metrah!

Amazing work @kommienezuspadt - also just did a midnight oil post!

Nice, @timelapse! Checking now. Yeah, I find myself doing more and more of these. I make a post at the coffee shop in the morning, but by the evening, I think of something else to write about and share. Steemit has caused a creative renaissance for me over the last year.

These pictures are awesome and the model is stunning. I've aways liked this style in photography!

I agree, wow

Thanks so much @dzboston33! I learned from a documentary photographer so dark photos with available light has always appealed to me, too.

Great post, great photos! Definitely cool that youre so invested in steemit

Oh, yeah @irphotography! Steemit gets about two posts a day out of me any more. When I'm not posting, I'm thinking about what could be a post, lol.

I like the setup of the scenes in the shoots. FOLLOWING you for sure, caught me at thoughts on life in general! Follow me back when I do post something, I hope. Till then Steem on! Cheers

I'll check out your blog now @nibzter8. Thanks for the comment and follow! It means a lot!

Thanks very much @gheff01! I'm glad you liked them!

unique and artistic - i am now following and upvoting too

Thanks @daydreams4rock! I appreciate that very much!

To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.

Absolutely. You should check out my friend @darkb4dawn's photography, @abbeymelchizedek! Super talented photographer and shoots minimalist things he sees. Things I would walk right past.

Stunning photography @kommienezuspadt fantastic shades, colour and shadow.... quality model too

Thank you very much @thebigone7! She is exceptional, and that was one of my favorite venues to ever shoot in.

I'm captivated by her hair and how it makes everything around her look beautiful. Thanks for sharing these great shots!

Thanks for commenting @imwatsi! She's a captivating model for sure. I loved working with her.

omg omg omg omg omg.. LOL, I am sorry but I absolutely ADORE this series. I love your vision. The early 1900;s visually is such eye candy, I love that you are doing a throw-back to that era. Gorgeous. Thank you for sharing these :)

Thank you so much @j-vo! You're always so sweet to me with your comments. I'm glad you like them. My entire career [....for at least the last five years] has been all vintage and pinup. It's such a treat to work with these men and women. They're some of the best in the fashion industry.

You're welcome - I promise it is sincere - your work is beautiful and I have a thing for the 20's and 30's so, your series really caught my eye!! I love it and can't wait to see more! :D

Can't wait to see that video! I love when the two of you work together, always some of my favorite shots of yours.

It's going to be hilarious. Yeah, it was fun while it lasted. Still have so much respect for her as a model @mterrisphoto.

Wonderful cheesecake, and of course, dark, antiquated, coppery tones. Dark and beautiful like a sound of a well made Spanish guitar of the same era. Surprisingly, for a bar the decor isn't at all cheesy and all in all in well taste! The lighting fixtures remind me of my old home in the south, where I spent a bit of my formative years.

All and all I wish that I could spend more time reading/viewing your posts. As for your screen name, that's actually one of my favourite songs from Tom. Fun fact: Alice was the first vinyl that I had purchased, at age 8 or 9.

Man, @yaboygotti! Your stock just went way up in my book for knowing the Tom Waits reference! That's awesome. Only one out of every 1000 people I met get that. Thank you for the comment! Yeah, I love that I've had a role in shaping the evolution of pinup photography. I've been really lucky to have met and worked with so many of these talked models and beauty artists.

The Stuff Dreams are Made of! Fantastic!

Thank you @bettystudios! I've been really fortunate to work with so many talented artists over the years. Thanks for the comments!

Love it, the story, light, ambient, great work! And it is real luck to have someone to work with that you understand each other..
