Hey, Steemit! Another early morning at @caffetto. I’m going to use these next few weeks to catch up on edits for clients that’ve been patiently waiting while Dark Pinup made it’s final lap of production before going to print. Now that it’s out of my hands, those edits and logistical things like ads, marketing and planning for Viva Las Vegas will now begin.
I wanted to share with you all a surprise package that came in the mail last night. Late last week, my friend @ryanashley texted me and said “Hey! What’s your address?”. I sent it to her and then hadn’t heard back. When I got home from @caffetto last night, waiting for me was a sealed manilla envelope.
I saw the senders address said Tattoo Society, and it occurred to me that this was the issue I’d shot @ryanashley for back in January. To be honest, I’d almost forgotten about it. @ryanashley was allowed to choose any photographer she wanted for the feature in Tattoo Society and back in early December, she asked if I could make it back to our hometown by the end of the year. We did our usual tattoo/photos trade, but I’ve been so fixated on Dark Pinup, the magazine was an afterthought after the photos were sent to the editor.
Here’s something to note about Tattoo Society. It is not Inked magazine. Inked and magazines like it are for fans of tattoos. It’s the mainstream tattoo culture magazine. Tattoo Society has a long standing reputation as the magazine for actual industry tattoo artists. There’s a prestige in being in it because it’s an acknowledgement of your peers, not [just] your fans.
I’ve done a lot of magazines over the years, but it’s not high on my list or priorities as a photographer. It’s rare to ever get paid and seeing my work in print doesn’t motivate me the same way it does others. It also tends to be a lot more work, release forms and email correspondence. Fortunately, Tattoo Society was painless and this ended up being one of my favorite publications to date.
You can pick up a copy of Tattoo Society, issue #61 featuring @ryanashley now at www.tattoosocietymagazine.com or on store shelves. Thanks for reading! I post daily. For more photography, art, illustration and the stories behind the work, follow me here @kommienezuspadt!
Thats a pretty slick surprise to get in the mail. I'm like you, I used to chase after publications whenever I could but I've only had a few that were worth the effort. This one looks slick as hell though, especially the cover article too. Well deserved dude!

Thanks @davekavanagh! Yeah, that's the truth. I remember when I got my first few opportunities to run in newspapers or magazines feeling like I'd "made it". I think we all go through that early on. Over time, though, it starts to sound a lot like "....it'll be great exposure for you". There's truth to the exchange of exposure, but unless it's a really incredible opportunity I can't pass up, I'm over the "exposure" angle. Most magazine offers I'm not interested in. This one was cool. I like shooting for a magazine that's more for the people in the industry than the fans of tattooing.

Oh man that exposure line drives me nuts. In some situations there actually is some worthwhile exposure available but its mostly just a carrot on a string to get free work. Thankfully anyone whos been around the block a bit will probably know how to see through the bullshit 😀

Yeah, @mihdhaekal! Tattoo Society is the one to read if you like the tattoos more than the culture of tattoos.

Wow, those tattoos look amazing. They beat the crap out of my flying fish on the forearm haha.
Also, what is @caffetto ? Is that a steemit account that is also a physical cafe people can go to?

I've honestly no idea who that woman in the magazine is but she looks so badass - empowered even. (Checked her steemit but it's empty) Those are pretty amazing shots you got for the mag too. Definitely accented the essence and the art behind those tats. Even today, tattoos are still taboo on some parts of the wold. But prints like this is really a wonderful initiative in celebrating the craft and most importantly the artists behind that keep it alive. :)

But above all, the photos were very beautiful and it shows that you are a professional. What would be a better intensive for you than the one you had in that magazine?

The magazines are cool, @masterworld, they’re just not a big priority for my career. There are other magazines like Inked that I really don’t like. They’ve stole my images of @ryanashley and other tattooed models and posted them on their social media sites without my permission or any photo credit. Tattoo Society has been great to work with, though. If more magazines were like them, it wouldn’t be an issue.

Congrats on the cover and the feature! I know what you mean though....the whole being featured thing can start to lose its appeal (when the trade off is Working for free). None the less- I still think it's fun to hold my work in my hands! I can't wait for you when Dark Pinup comes out.

Thank you @joleenwillis! It’s cool to hold work, I agree. It just never motivated me the same way it does some of my friends. I think things changed when I became a dad. TF anything lost almost all of it’s appeal.

Believe me, every time I see her and @joshbalz, I evangelize right up to the threshold of being an annoying friend. She's in the middle of filming season two of Inkmaster Angels so she's in a new city every night. I go back to Pennsylvania in May and I won't leave until she makes her introduction post :P
