Karner - ossuary from 13th. century in Tulln

After posted some photos from Tulln yesterday, I also want to show you this beautiful chapel.
When you come in, you feel that it's something special. It's a bit creepy and quiet.
It is located almost in the city center, not far from the Danube.

Karner (lat. Carnarius) is the common name in Austria and Bavaria for ossuary (Ossuarium).
Such were built in the Middle Ages (mostly 12th / 13th century) on cemeteries to keep exhumed bones.
This was necessary because there was limited space for new graves. Often the Karner stood southeast of the cemetery surrounded parish church and had a chapel built above it.
After 1900, many Karner were broken off or used differently, such as a war memorial or mortuary chapel.

This is Old German writing. It says:
Most beautiful Late Romanesque Karner of Austria, from the middle of the 13th. century, on the outside 11-sided, inside round two-storey building, richly structured portal, with original door; Romanesque frescoes, restored in 1874.
