Critter Friends in the Balcony Garden

in photography •  5 years ago  (edited)

I went to get some fresh parsley and chives in the small balcony garden earlier today. Lo and behold, there were some critter friends hold up in the parsley as well.

There were 3 caterpillars to be exact. Two of the same kind, and another of some other kind. They must like the parsley. I didn't notice any anywhere else. But I don't have many other plants. Basil must be too strong for them ;)

For a city balcony garden, I was surprised to see them there. I left them there to eat what they wanted and took some other branches for myself to eat ;)

Anyone know what these 2 species are?

Great shot on Critter #1 :) And very interesting thinking about how they got up there! Wow... depending on what level you are on, that could have be a serious climb for the 3 of em.

A butterfly / moth likely made the journey and laid this generation on the balcony.

I amn't a fan if insects. I will run away if I see something with many many small legs or wings, but...they are really pretty!:)
Nature is wonderful in any of its creature

I think they're all eastern black
swallowtail (or papilio polyxenes).

Surprising to see those up there! Some bugs are feasting on my basil this year lol

Where are you located? Some critters can be very painful to touch :D

Kill em with fire!

Lucky you! The Eastern Swallowtail butterfly laid her eggs there because she knew her caterpillars need to eat parsley, dill, fennel, carrots and such! Keep an eye out for the cocoons and maybe you will see them all become butterflies!

Nice shot! These little friends are once very common around our surroundings but urbanization has made their disappearance possible.
You have done a right thing by leaving them where they are. Usually people won't like them and try to destroy them as soon as they see them.
