The name of this lagoon is "Chinancocha" which means "Female Lagoon" in Quechua, native Inca's language. According to legend, it was created by Huandy's tears, the princess of the Yunga tribe when she was seeing her husband dying in the Huascaran snow mountain.

The princess and her lover were convicted until death because their relationship was forbidden. They belonged to different social classes.
