This is a different, but delightful, type of post than I normally articulate however I believe most people will thoroughly enjoy - especially if you appreciate the nation's great history. The following article may be found at:

I am an official 'Friend of the Pride of the Susquehanna' and support their fantastic, historic operation wholeheartedly. I am including original photos from last week's 'After Dark Cruise' which included a band and then 1 hour cruise from 11PM-midnight - awesome way to see the beautiful city of Harrisburg!

  • About the Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat and the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society

"The Pride of the Susquehanna Riverboat is an authentic stern-driven paddle wheel riverboat built 30 years ago as a community service project by the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society for the benefit of and visitors to the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area.

The Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society is a 501-C-3 non-profit public service organization headed by a Board of community leaders. The purpose of our organization includes increased tourism, economic development, and enhanced education regarding the history and ecology of the Susquehanna River and our region.

Since her construction and launch under the leadership of local businessman Mike Trephan in 1988, the Pride has carried over a million passengers. She’s has been, and is continually, used for weddings, parties, business functions, a whole variety of themed dinner cruises, Murder Mysteries, and the ever popular Pirates on the Pride. In recent years, the Pride’s events expanded drastically to include fun events like Arooga’s Wing Night, Hard-shell Crab Nights, Blues, Jazz, Family events, Wine & Cheese Cruises, and much more.

The Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society is also highly dedicated to education. To fulfill this important mission, we operate the Susquehanna River School, an organization and unique floating classroom experience, teaches children, adults and seniors alike about the history, ecology and environmental issues concerning the Susquehanna River and our region.

The Pride is offered by the Riverboat Society as a low-cost, fun alternative activity for the public to enjoy our beautiful natural resource, the Susquehanna River. Proceeds from ALL cruises (besides helping to keep the riverboat running!) go towards our community service projects that benefit seniors, children, military veterans and more. We work with various local organizations, including the Humane Society of Harrisburg, the “Feel Your Boobies” Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, and many more. So, when you “Ride the Pride”, you are helping keep this wonderful historic landmark “afloat” and benefiting your community!

Come join us this year and find out why the Pride is one of Central Pennsylvania’s most popular and unique attractions!

Fun Facts About the Pride!

The Pride is one of only 6 remaining “authentic” paddle wheel riverboat in the United States. This means that the Pride ONLY uses the paddle wheels for both propulsion and steering. There are no propellers, rudders or other forms of propulsion or steering. Truly a gem in our modern world!

The Pride is handicapped accessible for ALL cruises, except for the upper deck. There is a ramp leading to the dock onto the Pride. Wheelchairs can move about the lower deck, main salon and restrooms.

The Pride is annually inspected by the U.S. Coast Guard and all of our captains hold a 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard License. All crew members are trained by the captains to provide the utmost in safety & service to our passengers.
Due to winter ice, the Pride must be pulled from the river in November and then re-launched each year in April. The Pennsylvania Army National Guard provides this important service to the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society each year as a training mission to aide our non-profit organization!
The Pride can hold up to 120 passengers, according to U.S. Coast Guard regulations. This number varies, though, depending on the cruise type!
The interior of the Pride is a beautiful collection of mahogany woodwork, brass and copper, custom stained-glass ceilings, and mirrored walls. The bar at the front of the vessel is completely covered in copper with brass tacks, reminiscent of old-time riverboats from the 1800s!

All cruises depart from the City Island Docks, down from the baseball stadium on the Susquehanna River facing the Harrisburg Skyline."
