I climbed the Roraima and here's my experience / Subí al Roraima y así fué mi experiencia

Dentro del Parque Nacional Canaima, en el sector oriental, se encuentra el Monumento Natural Roraima, uno de los principales atractivos turísticos de la Gran Sabana. Descrito por primera vez por el explorador inglés Sir Walter Raleigh en 1596, sus 31 km² de área en la cima están divididos entre Venezuela (80 %), Guyana (15%) y Brasil (5 %) con acantilados de 400 metros de altura por todos sus lados. En la próxima foto pueden ver el hito que marca el area conde exactamente se unen Venezuela, Brasil y Guyana en un solo punto fronterizo. A este monumento se le conoce como punto triple.

Within the Canaima National Park, in the eastern sector, there is the Roraima Natural Monument, one of the main tourist attractions of the Gran Sabana. Described for the first time by English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh in 1596, its 31 km² of area at the top are divided between Venezuela (80%), Guyana (15%) and Brazil (5%) with cliffs 400 meters high On all sides In the next photo you can see the mark that marks the area before Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana in a single border point. This monument is known as a triple point.

El origen de la palabra Roraima no está bien definido. Los primeros exploradores en el área encontraron que muchos pemones locales se referían a esta montaña como «la madre de todas las aguas», nombre muy apropiado debido a que desde su cima caen numerosas cascadas de agua, las cuales son la fuente de algunos ríos que fluyen hacia el río Orinoco, el río Esequibo o el río Amazonas.

Su nombre se deriva de dos palabras en la lengua pemón: roro (‘verde-azulado’) e ima (‘gran’). Por lo tanto el significado de Roraima, dependiendo de la traducción que se haga del pemón, puede ser ‘gran verde-azulado’, aunque también puede ser ‘roca rodante’ o ‘fecunda madre de los torrentes’.

Tuve la oportunidad de subir a la cima de este tepuy con @Algarcia y quisiera contarles un poco de esta gran e inolvidable aventura en uno de los sitios mas increíbles de la tierra, tanto así que fue inspiración para el mundo mágico de la película de Pixar "Up".

The origin of the word Roraima is not well defined. The first explorers in the area found that many local pemones referred to this mountain as "the mother of all waters", a very appropriate name because many waterfalls fall from its top, which are the source of some rivers that Flow to the Orinoco River, the Essequibo River or the Amazon River.

Its name is derived from two words in the pemon language: roro ('azul-azulado') and ima ('gran'). Therefore the meaning of Roraima, depending on the translation of the pemon, may be 'great bluish-green', although it may also be 'rolling rock' or 'fertile mother of torrents'.

I had the opportunity to climb to the top of this tepuy with @ algarcia and I would like to tell you a bit about this great and unforgettable adventure in one of the most incredible places on earth, so much that it was inspiration for the magical world in the Pixar film "Up."

Para comenzar el viaje a Roraima, hay que viajar hasta el Estado Bolivar, nosotros hicimos el viaje en bus desde Caracas, la capital. En el estado bolivar uno de los sitios turísticos naturales mas interesantes es el "Parque La llovizna" con su hermosa catarata proveniente de las aguas del rio Orinoco con gran cantidad de sedimentos y el Caroní rico en ácidos orgánicos. Estos ríos tienen la particularidad de que por sus aguas de diferente composición y densidad, se unen sin mezclar sus colores.

To begin the trip to Roraima yo have to travel to Bolivar State, we made the trip in a Bus from Caracas, the capital. In Bolivar one of the most interesting natural tourist points is "La Llovizna Park" with its beautiful waterfall with water from the Orinoco River with great amount of sediments and the Caroní, rich y organic acids. These rivers have the peculiarity that because of their waters having different composition and density, the merge without mixing their colors.

Al día siguiente partimos por un largo camino rústico hacia donde sería el punto de control de visitantes llamado Paraitepuy, donde las autoridades llevan registro de quienes subirán a la expedición y asegurarse de que todos los turistas cuentan con equipo y guías autorizados. Es importante contar con alimentos suficientes, ropa adecuada, implementos de camping y artículos como bolsas de basura para garantizar la limpieza en nuestro campamento. Luego de esta revisión comienza la primera gran caminata hacia el punto de camping llamado Rio Tek. Generalmente todos pasan la noche ahí, aprovechando la cercanía del rio para darse un baño y hacer la cena.

The next day we started the hike through a long rocky road to where the visitor's center is, called Paraitepuy, where authorities have a registry of the hikers to make sure every tourist have the right equipment and an authorized guide. It is important to have enough food, right clothes, camping equipments and trash bags to guarantee the cleaningness of the camp. After this check starts the first trek to the camping site called Tek River. Usually everyone spends the night there, taking advantage of the nearby river to bath and make dinner.

El día comienza muy temprano ya que debemos caminar todo el día haciendo pocas pausas pero maravillados con las vistas que nos ofrece el tepuy. La meta de hoy es alcanzar el campamento base, donde podremos acampar, bañarnos en un pequeño pozo y preparar las comidas, además de encontrarnos con más personas de todas nacionalidades quienes están en el mismo camino que nosotros o ya van de bajada.

El campamento base es un sitio muy emocionante ya que se comprende la magnitud del desafío que nos toca mañana, estamos todos emocionados y compartimos la alegría de los que ya están de regreso de esta experiencia. A pesar que el sol nos acompaño todo el día, mañana nos tocará hacer el ascenso con clima frío y lluvioso. Algunas personas se desaniman al ver la lluvia y otras están totalmente dispuestas a coronar la montaña. Nosotros decidimos continuar, sabia decisión.

The day starts very early because we have to walk the whole day making small pauses but marvelled with the views the tepuy has to offer. Today's goal is to reach the Base Camp, where we can camp, bath in a small pond and prepare the food, besides meeting more people from all over the world that are on in our way or coming back down.

The Base Camp is a very exciting place because you understand the challenge that's coming tomorrow, everyone is very excited and we share the joy with the ones coming back. Even though the sun has been with us the whole day, tomorrow's ascension will be with a cold a rainy weather. Many people are turned down by the way while others are totally into making it to the top. We choose to continue, wise choice.

Subir por la rampa natural que nos ofrece la montaña no es trabajo sencillo, en particular, la cascada llamada paso de las lágrimas, que verán en la foto a continuación, corta el camino. Si hay lluvia, como nos sucedió a nosotros, esta cascada crece y hay que atravesarla, el sonido del agua cayendo directo en la cabeza, el abismo a un lado y las ráfagas de viento, hicieron de este trecho una aventura totalmente extrema.

Hiking up on the natural ramp the mountain offers us is not easy job, specially, the waterfall called "Paso de las lágrimas" (Tear's pass) that you'll see in the picture below, splits the road. If it's raining, as it happend to us, the fall, the fall's stream thickens and you have to go through it, the sound of the water hitting you right on the head, the chasm on one side and the gusts of wind made this stretch a totally extreme adventure.

Ya estamos en la cima, mas felices que nunca, aunque con mucho frío y la ropa empapada, es hora de hacer el primer campamento, un poco improvisado ya que las cuevas y espacios entre las rocas llamados "hoteles" por ser ideales para colocar las carpas, estaban ocupados. Al día siguiente logramos mudarnos a un "hotel" donde pudimos colocar mejor las carpas y hacer un area de cocina. Sin pausa, ese mismo día empezamos la larga caminata para conocer una parte de los 31 Km2 del Roraima. su belleza nos deja sin aliento y tomamos maravillosas fotos, antes que la neblina nos dejara como si estuviéramos viviendo dentro de una nube. Afortunadamente tuvimos tiempo de conocer los pozos de agua que se formaron por la erosión de miles de años de los cuarzos que se encuentran en abundancia. Es un lugar que todo el mundo debe conocer.

We are on the top, happier than ever, although very cold and all our clothes are wet, it's time to make the first camp, a little improvised because the caves and spaces between rocks called "hotels" that are ideal for placing the tents, are all occupied. The day after we got to move to a "hotel" where we could better place the tengs and make a cooking area. Without a pause, that day we started a hike to know a part of the 31 Km2 of Roraima. Its beauty left us breathless and we took amazing pictures, before the fog hit and left us as if living inside a cloud. Luckily we had enough time to see the water ponds that formed in the quartz after millions of years of erosion. It is a place everyone should go to.

En los días posteriores, conocimos sitios emblemáticos como el punto triple, que es la unión fronteriza de 3 países como les comente al principio, conocimos "la ventana" que es un cúmulo de enormes rocas que dejaron un espacio de por medio como una especie de ventana a un gran abismo, caminamos por un cañon inmenso para descubrir que estaba totalmente cubierto de cuarzos blancos y rosas. También tuvimos la maravillosa oportunidad de entrar a una laguna subterránea. Fue una grata sorpresa ya que nos cautivo al verla desde arriba, pero el guía se reservo el secreto y al hacernos continuar por un empinado camino, nos reveló que era el camino para entrar a la laguna. In the next few days we went to landmarks as the triple point, which is the border point between three countries that I told you about earlier, we also saw "the windows" which is a group of huge rocks that left a space between them making some sort of window to a great chasm, we walked through a huge canyon to discover it was completely covered by pink and white quartz. We also have the change to enter an underground lake. It was a nice surprise since it got our attention from above, but the guide kept the secret and after making us continue through a steep corridor, he revealed that it was the way to get to the lake. Conocer la Gran Sabana y subir al monte Roraima fue una gran experiencia y una meta más que cumplí en la vida. Sin duda una experiencia única. Espero que se animen a ir si no lo han hecho ya y que compartan conmigo sus experiencias en los comentarios.

Para finalizar les dejo algunas recomendaciones:

• No escatimen en buscar un guía experimentado y con testimonios positivos de otros viajeros. Es muy fácil perderse en el
  Roraima o sufrir algún accidente o imprevisto. Cuenta siempre con los expertos.
• Planifiquen su viaje con tiempo y teniendo el equipo adecuado. Si no lo tienen, su guía puede proporcionarles lo que
  necesitan en cuanto a carpas y sleeping bags.
• Ejercítate un par de semanas antes de ir.
• Lleva dinero en efectivo. Recomiendo informarse sobre las tarifas de los Pemones "Porteadores" por una tarifa, ellos
  cargaran tu equipaje por ti. Recomiendo esto con énfasis, quizás ahora pienses que tu morral no pesa tanto, pero luego de
  dos días caminando sin parar, el peso del bolso no te va a dejar disfrutar y el viaje se trata de pasarla bien.
• Asegúrate de que tu guía lleva los artículos adecuados para el manejo de los desechos que generará tu campamento. Tu
  también debes llevar bolsas plásticas tanto para cubrir todo tu equipaje de la lluvia como para recoger tus desechos.
• Lleva protector solar, repelentes y para vestir lo mejor es licras, no dejes de llevar licras de ciclista. Se secan rápido,
  protegen de la plaga, del sol y no ocupan espacio. En serio: LICRAS.
• Zapatos cómodos y resistentes no siempre son los de marca o mas caros. No lleves zapatos nuevos.
• No pienses que con la comida que te proporcionará el campamento esta bien. Lleva tus provisiones de snacks y tu propia
  botella de agua reusable.
• Cuida tus rodillas y tobillos, evita saltos abruptos y correr.
• ¡Diviértete y toma muchas fotos!

To conclude I leave some recommendations:

• Do not hesitate to look for an experienced guide and positive testimonials from other travelers. It is very easy to get lost in Roraima or to suffer some accident. Always be with the experts.
• Plan your trip ahead of time and have the right equipment. If you don't have it, your guide might provide you with what you might need like tents and sleeping bags.
• Work out a couple of weeks before you go.
• Carry cash. I recommend you to inquire about the rates of Pemones "Porteadores" (local sherpas) for a fee, they will carry your luggage for you. I recommend this with emphasis, maybe now think that your backpack does not weigh so much, but after two days walking non-stop, the weight of the bag will not let you enjoy and the trip is about having fun.
• Make sure your guide is carrying the proper waste management articles that your camp will generate. You should also carry plastic bags both to cover all your luggage from the rain and to collect your waste.
• Bring sunscreen, insect repellents and for wear the best is leggings, do not hesitate ant brin cycling tights. They dry fast, protect from the insects, from the sun and they don't take much space up. Seriously: Leggings, yoga pants, cycling tights.
• Comfortable and sturdy shoes are not always branded or expensive. Do not wear new shoes.
• Don't think that the food provided by the camp or guide will be enough. Take your own snacks and reusable water bottle.
• Take care of your knees and ankles, avoid abrupt jumps and run.
• Bring some ziplock bags, they might come in handy.
• If you go as a couple, one goal is to reach the galactic-spiritual nirvana in one of the world's energy spots. Don't miss the chance to do something daring when everyone sleeps (wink wink, nudge nudge, poke poke) 🙊
