American Girl In Europe | Faces Of Belgrade - Street Photography Adventure

in photography •  6 years ago  (edited)

I’ve spent the last week in Belgrade Serbia roaming around this beautiful city. Something that I was really pushing myself to try while I was here was street photography. It’s not something I’ve ever done.. and quite frankly I just don’t take photos of people normally. Not sure why.. I just seem to focus on small details in nature etc, and humans were just seen as something that was getting in the way 😬

But, the last few months I have been following a certain street photographer and noticed something... those beautiful moments I look for in the unseen beauty in nature? Yeah, they exist in my fellow humans as well.. crazy I know, but finding the stunning beauty in a simple moment is really quite poetic. Those moments that would normally just pass us by.. capturing them to display that hidden beauty within.

So, since I was in the perfect city for it.. I decided to give it a try. I’m on a mission to step outside my comfort zone (year of firsts) and this is just another way to do just that. While it did take me a few days to actually build up the courage to take a totally candid photo of a stranger without their permission.. I ended up at least getting a few.

While I don’t think they are anything amazing.. I wanted to document them here.. as a blockchain record of that time I jumped out of my comfort zone and did something crazy. Plus, they will be nice to look back on as I continue to grow and improve in my photography journey...

Thank you so much! 🤗

These are stunning photographs, seriously! Great job at capturing the spirit of Belgrade. :) My favorites are 1, 7 and 10 - some lovely gestures and interactions with subjects. Well done!

Awe thank you, that means a lot coming from you. Those are some of my favorites as well.. thanks for inspiring me ❤️

I thought you were kidding when you said that you were in Belgrade :D Beautiful shots !

Hahaha! No I am really here! 👀

Well I leave tomorrow but have been here for the week. Thank you 😊

I love the silently judging grandma in photo 3 :o)

Right?!? 😂 ... I thought I was being so sly too.. she caught me and she was not impressed. First dirty look of my street photography experience.. it made me giggle.

For just dipping your feet these are great photos. The overlooks you have captured as a backdrop are also nice, Belgrade looks stunning. I fear that where I live you would capture many abandoned buildings and maybe have issues taking photos of the locals. Did you later get any info from these people to send them their candids? Just wondering, that would be really cool to do.

Thank you I really appreciate that! Yes actually.. the gentleman who is smiling actually came to me after and had me take a few more to email him hahah. He was very kind.

Thank you ❤️

I think you nailed it. Some really great captures in there. Some weird surreal colours/lighting in a few as well sort of "bisexual lighting" i think they call it.

Awe thank you! 😊

I have never heard the term bisexual lighting .. but maybe my editing needs work 😂..

most days I went were cloudy but bright and it made for interesting looks, which always makes it fun.

I hope you are well!

Belgrade! that's one place I certainly wanted to visit.
ever been very close to it once some time ago. (in Ljubljana)

thanks for so... juicy photos! :)
(I mean very bright nice colors)

It is really beautiful here, definitely add it to your list if you can! I’m adding it to my go back there again list.

Thank you!

Nice shots.
I'm avoiding taking photos of people as well.

Thank you!! Yeah it’s a hard mentality to get out of.. even when traveling before I would always avoid getting people in my shots.. I wanted a photo of the beach after all.. not the people on the beach haha. So it’s been really interesting changing my perspective and actually paying attention to the individuals and those moments. It’s been fun so far!

Beautiful photos with great atmosphere. Love that one with the two older ladies and the one with the river (Sava?) and the lights... haha... the more I look at them, the more I like them all.

I find street photography interesting, because I find people and their stories interesting. Never really got into it myself, as I don't know enough about the legal situation of publishing a photo of a person, that might not even know about it...

I was fortunate enough, to spend a week in Serbia this summer and also being together a lot with the local people. For me as a German it brought many eye opening moments and it was one of the best experiences in my life. Spent the last night in Belgrade too... what a city! Great how you captured these moments and the cold and clear November light.

I love how people look surprised generally, and the expression of the older grumpy-looking couple lol. Did anyone say something to you? I've always wanted to do that myself, but I'm too much of a chicken and am afraid people may get pissed

Haha yes the grumpy ladies were my fav.. I actually had this fear as well but got no negativity at all. Someone even gave me their email to send them the photo.. so, everyone was really great and I have come to realize most don’t care like I thought they would.

You would not believe me but I think I know that girl (first pic), met her(or her twin sister) at a party long ago :D small world....and my fav are kid with his dad and smiling man . <3 and love how you saw people through your lens... i'm waiting for more from Belgrade...: )

Hahaha! That’s so funny! It is a small world... thank you 😊 I really enjoyed it.

Beautiful photos, they really give a feeling about a town with such life in it !

Thank you spider! Yeah, no matter the weather there are always people hanging out in the area and just enjoying life.. it was a beautiful sight.

Krakow then Belgrade what a cool adventure. Street photography and pictures of people are going to be your specialty, I think.

I know right? I’ve had quite the adventure these last 12 days. Now back home to take photos of moss 😄

I will continue to try to take more photos of people.. the holidays should give me good practice. Thank you!
