LSCOTTPHOTOS Daily Photo Initiative #6 - White Balance preferences (2 Original Photos)

Day 6 of 365

ISO 320, 43mm, 0ev, f/5, 1/80

Forgive my lack of creativity as I am not feeling well today. I'm proud I just got outside to take this picture. It's been very gloomy and rainy here so the mushrooms have popped up around my yard like... well, mushrooms.
The photo above was taken under the macro/flower default setting but I did play around with white balance under the aperture setting.

ISO 100, 55mm, 0ev, f/5.6, 1/20
Shady WB - Stormy outside and the mushroom was hidden beneath a draping tree

I prefer the cooler photo because it makes the red of the fungi pop against the dark leaves. I feel like the vibrance increases overall in the second photo but loses its importance.

Which do you prefer? The cooler or the warmer color photo?

I like the cooler one better, maybe a tad warmer than that, about 15-20% along the way to the second picture. I always try to get the colours I remember, because those are what struck me in the first place.

If it is really critical to get the colours to match the real thing, put a piece of white paper (or anything that is known to be white or neutral grey) in the corner of the scene and calibrate the white balance on that in Photoshop. Don't trust your eyes for this, they come with auto white balance.

I've always seen professional photographers use a white page to calibrate white balance but I never understood/tried it! I'm learning about it little by little so I think I will try it soon!

I like the cooler one better. Although they are both nice photos. And a very freaky mushroom.

I agree the first one is my preferred.
