Kentucky Woods Weekend

in photography •  7 years ago

We went hiking in the Kentucky woods this past weekend, and had a great time exploring.

There are around 20 trails on the 3,000 acres that surround Shaker Village - needless to say we only chose 2 this time and finished our 12,000 steps by lunchtime.

This shot reminded me of Lord of the Rings when Frodo and the crew first encountered a Ringwraith.

We made our way across a few creeks/cricks/streams/whatever you like to call them till we finally found.....

The waterfall

I've never seen a stream source coming right out of the mountain. That water was cold.

-------------------------

There is plenty of jewelweed around the streams here. Fun fact: jewelweed is a superb poison ivy healer.

Two summers ago my arm was swollen 3x its normal size. We found some jewelweed from a generous friend and started rubbing it directly on my skin. It has the consistency of Aloe Vera and heals just as well.

This is one of my favorite shots. It looks like icicles.

Thank you for stopping by! All photos were taken with my iPhone 7.

Nothing is more important than have a quality time with mother nature.
It is so calm over there, the brezzy air, the sound of leaves oh man !
Fantastic photography @lydon.sipe
Steem on !

It truly is gorgeous out there. Your description is making me want to go back!
Steem on @heelzkinu!

Looks like a beautiful place you found there. The waterfall is just great. Tell me, did you run into any moonshiners up in them Kentucky woods? ;)

Lol. Well, this particular waterfall and trail are on a Shaker Village preservation. That would be quite the party. 😏

They do make lovely furniture. The shaker style was very popular here in the 90's. The 1990's that is lol
It does look stunningly beautiful there.

Haha, the 90's that is indeed. I have a few pieces of Shaker furniture from the Lancaster, PA area where I grew up - excellent craftsmanship.

You said it. The skill of those people is/was impressive. Such delicate but strong rocking chairs etc. My cousin is coming to visit tomorrow. He is from Lebanon P.A. and knows a thing or two about the region. I'll pick his brains. lol

Mmm. When I hear Lebanon I think of Lebanon Bologna, lol.

Hmm, when I think of Lebanon. I think of the country lol I was there just last year. Fabulous place.

Haha, yes it is.

Beautiful photos, and very interesting about Jewelweed...

I'd like to hear more about that! Natural healing is very important to me.

😄😇😄

@creatr

You have inspired me. I cannot imagine why I haven't done a post on jewelweed yet, lol. You the man!

Glad to hear it!

Please let me know when you post it; I would like to add it to my Steemit Library Health Shelf.

You are too kind my friend. I will let you know.

Beautiful shots, lydon. I love waterfalls - we live in the waterfall capital of Ontario - there are over 100 waterfalls and cascades, some within walking distance of our home. Deb and I intend to visit them all, but that will take some time :)

That is a lot of waterfalls! You and Deb have some adventures ahead of you. :)

we sure do!

That's why I love Steemit... I love travelling and when I see all these wonderful pics from another countries, I want to travel again..!
I will come in your country one day, for sure ! :)

It is beautiful! :)

This is pretty!

Thank you!

Looks like a nice hike @ lydon.sipe, nature can give you all the quality moments that you need on special moments. My favorite is the smell of campfire after a day in the bush. Enjoy your travels and check out mine, you'll love it ;)

There is nothing quite like the smell of a campfire. Checking out your work. :)

Yep, this looks like Appalachia. It's so beautiful.

Do you know if the spring water is drinkable? We have a spring about two miles from our house that we go and get water from to drink at times. It tastes wonderful.

And you are right about the spring water...it is freezing cold! We have a place about 30 miles away we go and swim that is a fresh spring. I can barely stand it, but the kids love it. I will have to get pictures some time.

Thanks for sharing.

2/500 comments...lol.

I talked about tasting the water while we were there and I never did, haha.

Kids often don't have temperature gauges - it is the Creator's way, haha. That would be a great post for the challenge you are on!

Only 498 to go! Lol.

It would be a good post for the challenge! I will have to talk to my wife because it's way back in the woods somewhere and I get lost everytime I go into the boonies of Hanging Limb. Almost 10 years here and I still get turned around back there.

I remember growing up and we would always go to Lake Erie in the summer. My parents would have to make my brother stay out of the water because his lips would literally start to turn blue, lol.

nice clicks

Thank you.
