THE MOTHER'S SON
On the abandoned plain
That the warm breeze heats,
Pierced through by bullets —
Two, from side to side —,
He lies dead, and cools.
Blood marks his uniform.
With arms outstretched,
Pale, fair-haired, lifeless,
He gazes with a languid,
Blind stare at the lost skies.
So young! How young he was!
(What age is he now?)
An only child, his mother had given him
A name and cherished it:
"The mother's son."
Fell from his pocket
The small cigarette case.
His mother had given it to him.
The case is whole,
Untouched. He no longer is.
From another pocket, fluttering
With its edge brushing the ground,
The whiteness sheathed
Of a handkerchief... The old maid
Who rocked him as a baby had given it to him.

Far away, at home, a prayer rises:
"May he return soon, and safe!"
(The webs the Empire weaves!)
He lies dead, and decays,
The mother's son.

Have you danced inside?
Looks very promising with these girls at the front ;)))

No, I didn’t dance. An interesting and common concept in Havana, with several dance halls. I tried another one... this one also had a restaurant on one of the floors of the building ;) Cheers :)

I haven't been to Cuba but what I love about it... lack of so many things we, here, consider as given, and still, people there know how to enjoy Life. And the short time we're given here ;) Cheers!

Yes, it's true, I was left with the impression that they are a peaceful people... if they seemed pleased to me??? I must admit that I saw a lot of sadness in their eyes... but I also saw a lot of joy... I wish all the best for that place!
