This picture was taken at the Museo Nacional de Arqueología Antropología e Historia del Perú, in Lima, Peru. It shows the evidence of a cranial trepanation (surgery) in ancient Peru (Paracas culture). The hole was covered by a gold plate. There is bone growth at the borders demonstrating that the individual survived the procedure.
