Sailing On 1889 Zwarte Valk (part 1)

I have just returned from ten wonderful days on the sailship Zwarte Valk. The ship was built in 1889 and the website has interesting historical info.

Sailing such a tall ship is a lot of fun and enough work to keep a dozen people busy. But it can be navigated with as little as a crew of three (skilled sailors). So we were invited to participate but at the same time were free just to chill if we preferred.

The ship is ideally suited for sailing in the Wadden Sea, a sea area that runs dry or very shallow on low tide. Therefore, boats like the Zwarte Valk have a flat bottom to stay upright when (intentionally) running aground.

The above picture shows two sailors at the main winch hoisting the mainsail. While exceptional grinders can go all the way, we usually changed people midway.

The above picture shows Zwarte Valk sitting on only a foot of water which allowed us to leave the ship for a walk, catching crabs, or inspecting the rudder ;-)

Greetings dear friend, congratulations on that excellent experience with your wife, must be very exciting to work with a sailboat, something difficult too ... I work with tugboats and there is a little easier to handle as it is with propulsion engines and not wind.

WOW!
The second picture perfectly demonstrates Zwarte Valk's flat bottom... at first glance, I was afraid you were stuck!
This type of boat would be very practical for sailing in the Venetian lagoon, where the water is often shallow.

Very interesting Marius - I have never heard of such a large ship having a flat bottom and intentionally running aground. It makes for a very interesting photograph - you guys almost look like walking on water! Thanks for sharing your sailing trip.

I actually never heard of flat bottom ships - not that I'm an expert with ships, but... It's very interesting approach, but serves the purpose, and the second photo is just unbelievable.

Good to know you have had a safe sailing. That last picture is amazing. I can't believe a boat that big can stand in such shallow waters.

Also, I think I'd just be way too scared to take a Leica M10 aboard a boat haha.

It must be very exciting to really navigate a ship, I, in the only ship I have ridden, is in the replica of Leander, the ship in which Francisco de Miranda arrived in Venezuela again. This replica is located in the Generalissimo Francisco de Miranda park. Caracas Venezuela.

Waooo, how wonderful, if I had seen the last picture without reading the text, I would think they were people of great faith and could do what Jesus and Peter did.

I don't remember seeing a boat with so little draft, I see that the water level doesn't exceed the knees of people, how can you navigate that boat like that? it seems interesting.

@mariusfebruary, Catching Crabs, whenever i hear about the crabs i remember those rainy ☔ days when nearby people try to catch crabs which come out of water due to heavy rain and everybody try to catch them.

The one time I've been on a sail boat (admittedly not the size of the one you went on) was a pretty harrowing experience!

The conditions were pretty windy but our sailing instructor gave us all the green light to have a go at steering the boat... Well, just call me the side sailor haha

Managed to pick up a side wind and it was like a car driving on two wheels and there wasn't anything I could seemingly do about it to make it go flat down on the sea!

What felt like 2 hours was probably less than a minute before the instructor politely said "I'll take it from here" 😂

Well, I'll leave the steering to the professionals but it wasn't the first time I'd have slightly rocky boat trips!

Glad your experience was a bit more routine 😁
