Garden Centre

in photography •  6 years ago  (edited)

My wife and I visited a garden centre yesterday evening. Photos below. It was easier to get good quality photos of the plants with my iPhone rather than with my DSLR probably because close-ups require a low f number and the phone camera has it. It's easier to put the phone next to a plant and check on the screen that the plant is properly in focus.

This garden centre, Kaijansinkon Puutarha, has seven such large greenhouses. All of the plants were in excellent condition as they always are. It's a very well run operation. It's easily accessible from the E4 motorway about 15 km to the northeast of Lahti.

Great shots.. I just bought a Nikon D3500 and find my Samsung J7 takes better close ups.

I have a Nikon D3400, the predecessor to that particular one. The problem with trying to take close ups with the Sigma 70-300 mm lens is that you have to stand at least about 1.5 m away from the subject of your photo. I've found that focusing through the viewfinder can be a bit difficult. It could be that I just don't know how to do that properly but I find myself having to take a many shots to get a few right. There are other variables to consider such as shutter speed which has to be fast enough to avoid camera shake or motion blur when photographing moving flowers, for example. It's so much easier to put the phone camera right next to the subject, tap the screen to focus, and just shoot.

The results in the past have been surprisingly good even with a modest phone camera. I took these with my old Samsung J5:

Great photography !!

Fabulous photographs! I especially like the one of the dahlia.

Thank you! I like the dahlia, too!

I had to look up "garden centre" on Google. I wanted to use the British word. I wonder what they use in North America or Commonwealth countries other than the UK or Canada.

I saved it with your user name as the file name (this will work until you post another photograph that I like)! There's something about the colours that is very appealling and might inspire some artwork. Let's see :)
I'm not sure about other terms for garden centre - but I love the atmosphere and smell of them. That slightly damp environment!

I'm glad you liked it.

I think they use the same term in America based on Google search results, only spelt "center" instead of "centre".

Here, it's called "puutarha" meaning just garden, which can be confusing.

Do nice to be at the garden center! This is a huge place with so many kinds of house plants! Dahlias look so attractive!
