Meeting other Steemians is great but after meeting one of the most prolific minds on Steem and a number of other thoughtful individuals it feels as though the brain needs a cooldown period as badly as Fukushima. I went to town to buy a new mobile phone cover for my daughter on Sunday afternoon. On the way back, I took a few pictures a lake a couple of kilometers east of the city center.
It's obviously autumn. The next 3-4 weeks will look awesome as the autumn colors will be at their best.
Before packing up and driving back home I went to Hervanta buy fuel and take some photos of Lake Suolijärvi in Hervanta. I grew up close to this lake and it's where we'd usually go to swim in the summer when we were kids.
It's too bad the water tower is no longer accessible to the public. Otherwise I would've taken this picture myself.
Hervanta is a district of Tampere. It was built about 10 km south of the city center in the woods starting from 1974. It's a peculiar place. It's a low-income district where the average income is much lower than in the city on average. I went to primary school and later upper secondary school there. It's a mostly working class district with a population of 25,000 with some lower middle class and even upper middle class thrown into the mix particularly in the outskirts of it. A fairly large percentage of its population belongs to the bottom of the socio-economic scale. I recall the schools having pretty good resources for dealing with students who caused trouble. For the last 25-30 years it has had a sizable immigrant population, mostly Russians, Estonians and a fairly large number of refugees from the Middle East.
But that's not the whole story. The suburb also sports a university of technology that has about 10,000 students and thousands of staff. The university is surrounded by the offices of a lot of tech companies and the number of tech jobs in the area is possibly in the four figures. That makes the population of Hervanta quite an eclectic mix of various walks of life and ethnic groups. Back in the day when I was a kid, Hervanta had a bad reputation. But I think it was always more peaceful than people gave it credit for. After all, the Police University College was also in the middle of it. For quite some time, the elderly have been over-represented in the age distribution. These days, you see a lot of old people in their wheelchairs and mobility scooters at the mall instead of young people.
This is the dressing room of the winter swimming place.
