Rauvolfia tetraphylla, commonly known as the snake root or devil pepper,is a medicinal plant belonging to the Apocynaceae family.Native to Southeast Asia, this evergreen shrub is renowned for its historical use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda.
The plant typically grows in tropical and subtropical regions, favoring moist and well-drained soils. It reaches a height of about 1 to 2 meters, with glossy leaves arranged in whorls of four, hence the species name tetraphylla.
One of the key bioactive compounds found in Rauvolfia tetraphylla is reserpine, which has garnered significant attention for its pharmacological properties.Reserpine has been traditionally used as an antihypertensive and tranquilizer, attributed to its ability to deplete neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and serotonin in nerve endings. This mechanism has led to its application in treating conditions like hypertension, anxiety, and certain psychiatric disorders.
