Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Castell'Arquato is a medieval town in the province of Piacenza, in the northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna. The village lies on the hills of the Arda Valley, which were covered by the sea in prehistoric times, and where many fossils can still be found and it is located in Placentianum Natural Geological Reserve, which owes its name to the historic period.
The name could derive from the Roman noble Caio Torquato, who founded the first settlement. According to another hypothesis, the name derives from castrum quadratum (square castle), referring to the quandrangular plant of the castrum.
Castell'Arquato has retained its original medieval appearance which, scholars say, is still what it was like in the 10th century. The older section of the town is located at a higher altitude, on top of a rock and is now surrounded by the newer sections that have been built in the past years.
Town's location had made it strategically important in medieval times.
The Viscontea Fortress (La Rocca Viscontea), commissioned by the City of Piacenza to Luchino Visconti and built between 1342 and 1349, is one of the most important military complexes in Northern Italy. Only one of the four defensive towers has remained.
In the nearby square you can admire the collegiate church of Saint Mary which was first built in the 8th century. However, after a massive earthquake it had to be completely rebuilt in the 12th . The most noteworthy aspect of the church is its Romanesque paradise portico, dating back to the 14th century. The church's four apses and its 13th century cloister are also quite beautiful. Within the church are several sculptures from the 12th century and beautiful frescoes and on the left side of the church there are the ”Porticos of Paradise”, which house the tombs of numerous famous people.
The Palazzo del Podestà was built on the north side of the monumental square in 1292 and today is home to the boardroom of the municipality. The square was embellished by the Loggetta of the Notari (The Notaries’ Lodge), which was added in the 15th century, enriched by a harmonious stairway (15th century).
The Torrione Farnese, in ”Monteguzzo” quarter, is worth a visit; it was started around 1530 and uncompleted, probably due to the death of Duke Bosio Sforza II.
The Ducal palace, was built in 1292 by Alberto Scoto. The palace had been used as a residence in the past centuries and several alterations have been made to the main building in recent times. An underground tunnel connects the palace to the Farnese Tower.
The Fontana del Duca (The Duke’s Fountain) dates back to the same period and it is still working. The Hospital of Santo Spirito, built in the 16th century, is now the seat of the Geological Museum.
Castell'Arquato is one of Italy's most beautiful villages ('I borghi più belli d'Italia'). It has also been awarded the Orange Flag (a national tourist award).
Thing to see: The Historic Centre, the Viscontea Fortress, the collegiate Church of Saint Mary of the Assumption, the Palazzo del Podestà, the Notaries’ Lodge, the Torrione Farnese, the Ducal palace, the Hospital of Santo Spirito, the Geological Museum.
