Ciao a tutti,

Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Calimera is a small town in the province of Lecce, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is located in the Grecìa Salentina area of the Salento peninsula in Italy a linguistic “island” where the people still speak a strange dialect called Griko.
Some claim that the significance of its name has its origins from the Byzantine age, but it could even be Hellenic (8th Century BC). However, it comes from the Greek Kalimera, which means “good day”.
In the past, its fief was linked to the most influential person from the City of Martano.
From a prior era, dating back to the Iron Age, one can visit megalithic dolmen scattered throughout the Calimera territory, among which the most famous is definitely the Dolmen Placa.
The historic centre of Calimera has the typical ‘case a corte’ and the long narrow streets. The Montinari Palace was built in the 17th century and looks very elegant.
The Mother church is dedicated to St Brizio and was built in the 17th century. It has a Latin cross plan and the façade has a beautiful portal. Inside there are seven beautiful baroque altars with some interesting paintings.
The church of the Virgin was built after the earthquake of 1743, the façade is very simple, inside there is a beautiful painting of 17th century.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Constantinople dates probably to the 17th century. Inside there is a beautiful fresco representing the Virgin and the saints.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Carmine was built in 1577 and the St. Anthony’s church dates to the 18th century. The church’s building has an original and harmonious façade but, inside, the restoration works done over the past centuries are evident.
The S. Vito Church, close to the ancient Bosco di Calimera (ancient forest), is also noteworthy. It contains a pierced limestone megalith slab of pre-Christian age (4th century B.C.) and probably was a sepulchral stone.
Of great interest, here, are the house-museum of the farmers’ life, a treasure of local people’s culture and the Salentine City Museum of Natural History where visitors can learn curiosities about local animals.
In the Museum of History of Calimera people can see some interesting findings of this area.
