Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Maglie is a town in the province of Lecce, in the southern Italian region of Puglia. It is located in the very heart of the Leccese Salento, enjoys a strategic geographical position as a communication hub between the Adriatic and Ionian seas. For this reason, it is considered as the virtual chief town of lower Salento.
There are no historical documents about the origins of this small town but the recovery of some megalithic monuments proves that man already lived on this territory during the prehistoric age.
Other finds, in turn, testify about the activity of the populations during the subsequent Bronze Age (3.500-12th Century BC).
The first village was probably founded around the IX century when the Greek, built three towers in the three hamlets of St Egidio, St. Basilio and St. Vito to defend themselves from the Saracens. After the unification of the three neighbouring centres the new-born town was first called Magalia and then Maglie; this name probably derived from the Messapian Malle, meaning height.
With the arrival of the Normans during the 11th Century, the suburb grew and enjoyed a period of economic development, which continued with the Swabians. It was the Angiòs who constructed the Castle in 1266.
Maglie passed under Aragonese domination (1442) and experienced the scourge of Turkish invasions, as with other cities in Puglia. Sadly, the most famous of these happened in 1491.
In 1190, Tancredi of Altavilla gave it as a feud to Evangelista Lubello. Subsequently, it passed to the families Maresgallo, Carrera, Prati di Arnesano, Filomarini, and eventually Capece.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Ferdinand II of Bourbon decided that the road connecting Otranto to Gallipoli had to pass through Maglie, thus confirming its significant topographic position and contributing to its economic and cultural fortune.
In fact, the most important monuments in town, the same town’s urban layout characterised by Murat-style stone buildings, all date back to that period.
In 1861, Maglie became part of the Reign of Italy, as with the whole of Puglia.
A visit to Maglie, includes the Castle which became Capece Palace, the Mother Church dedicated to St. Nicholas, patron of the town with its beautiful adjacent bell tower, the ancient Church of Our Lady of Graces the impressive column of the Madonna delle Grazie and the S. Giovanni Church (end of 16th Century). Just outside Maglie, one can also visit the Baroque Sanctuary of the Madonna Addolorata.
On the outskirts of Maglie, one can also visit the abandoned Roca Vecchia rural home.
Thing to see: the Historical centre, the Mother Church, the Castle (or Capece Palace), the Church of Our Lady of Graces, the column of the Madonna delle Grazie, the S. Giovanni Church, the Sanctuary of the Madonna Addolorata, the Church of the Immaculate Virgin, the Franite Menhir, the Church of Saint Anthony Abbot, the Church of Our Lady of the Ladder, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Museum of Palaeontology and Paleethnology “De Lorentiis”.

For privacy reason images with people have to be accompanied with the “model release”. It's very important.
For this reason I prefer to shoot when people are out of frame.
