L'Abbazia di Santa Maria di Barsento è una piccola chiesa nel comune di Noci in provincia di Bari, nella regione italiana meridionale della Puglia. È un luogo pieno di mistero ed estremamente ricco di architettura, archeologia e natura.
La strada sale la collina fino all'abbazia, da cui si può ammirare l'intera area. Molti racconti popolari locali popolano questo posto con bestie fatate e tesori nascosti. Si dice che in passato, alla base del pendio, dopo forti piogge emersero dal terreno oggetti antichi.
In cima, la piccola chiesa ti fa subito pensare ai tempi passati. L'edificio adiacente, una volta un monastero, fu successivamente trasformato in una masseria. Il nome Barsento, di origine messapica, significa che è alto, forte.
L'origine del nome e dei reperti archeologici hanno datato l'origine del sito al periodo pre-ellenico. Alcuni studiosi rimandano la fondazione dell'abbazia all'età gregoriana. Le altre ipotesi fissano all'età alto-medievale o longobarda e, per le analogie con chiese come S. Ilario di Benevento, datano la costruzione fra l'800 e l'840 o rimandano al periodo romanico.
Oggi la chiesa di S. Maria di Barsento mostra una facciata a guglia, dotata di un unico portone anteriore preceduto da un portico quadrato, probabilmente risalente al XIV-XV secolo, chiuso ai lati e coperto da tetto a conversa. Sia i tetti spioventi a doppia falda delle navate sia quello del protiro sono ricoperti da chianche. Il prospetto termina con un piccolo campanile a vela, tipico dell´architettura religiosa rurale pugliese. Tre piccole absidi mostrano un rivestimento semiconico, voltato con la tecnica delle coperture a trullo.
Nel corso dei secoli la struttura è stata oggetto di numerose azioni volte al mantenimento o all'ammodernamento.

The St. Mary's Abbey of Barsento is a small church in the municipality of Noci in the province of Bari, in the Southern Italian region of Puglia. It's a place full of mistery and extremely rich in architecture, archeology and nature.
The road climbs the hill all the way up to the abbey, from where you can overlook the whole area. Many local folk tales populate this place with fairy beasts and hidden treasures. It is said that in the past, at the base of the slope, after heavy rains ancient objects emerged from the ground.
On the top, the small church immediately makes you think of other times. The adjacent building, once a monastery, was later transformed in a manor house (masseria). The name Barsento , Messapian, means that it is tall, strong.
The origin of the name and archaeological finds, have traced the origin of the site to the pre-Hellenic period. Some scholars refer the founding of the abbey age Gregorian. The other hypotheses sets the foundation age altomedievale or Lombard and, for the analogies with churches like S. Hilary of Benevento, given the construction between l'800 el'840 or refers to the Roman period.
Today, the church of S. Maria di Barsento shows a spire façade, equipped with a single front door preceded by a square porch, probably dating from the fourteenth to fifteenth century, it closed sides and covered by a roof conversation. Both sloping roofs gable of the aisles is that of the vestibule are covered with chianche . The statement ends with a small bell tower, typical of rural Puglia religious. Three small apses show a half-conical liner, turned the technique of trulli roofs.
Over the centuries the structure has been the subject of several actions aimed at maintaining or modernization.
Thing to see: The Barsento Abbey, the Cave of soap and that of Madonna, the Farms: I Monti, Papa Perta, lodge Park, Vaccari Countess, Angiulli.

Luogo estremamente affascinando. Questa Abbazia mi ricorda molto un Eremo. Interessante è l'impiego di pietra per la costruzione del tetto, che mi richiama alla mente i trulli

Questa chiesa sembra molto accogliente. Gli scatti con il cielo sullo sfondo sono molto belli nella tua fotocamera. Lo evidenzia abbastanza.
