"What is the biggest thing on our planet"?
Is it an Burj Khalifa? Don't think so. Is it a whale? Biggest animal-yes, but not the biggest thing on our planet

The biggest thing on our planet are Oceans

Oceans are covering insane amount of our planet, over 70%!Thats a global, interconnected mass of water, also called the World Ocean and its divided on 5 smaller oceans.
First one is Pacific Ocean than Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, South Ocean and Arctic Ocean. Every single one of these 5 oceans has their own characteristic.
For example, Pacific is the largest one, and Arctic is the world’s smallest and shallowest ocean.

So what's the biggest importance of Oceans?

The greatest importance for the ocean's ecosystem is that by increasing the depth of the ocean, the amount of sunlight reaching it, will decrease. In the shallowest water layers, where it's the brightest, plants use the process of photosynthesis for the production of food and energy. In water layers beneath this zone, light passes more difficult until there is full darkness without any light.

Another important factor in the oceans is that sea water in different depths in chemistry behaves differently. Living creatures in the sea, such as bivalves, coral, limestone algae, silica and others use calcium carbonate and silicon dioxide by biomineralization to build their shells and skeletons.

Ocean pollution

As well as to the forests, biggest enemy to Ocean is human.
The biggest source of pollution in the ocean is directly from land based sources, such as oil, dirt, septic tanks, farms, ranches, motor vehicles, among larger sources. Thousands of tons of waste and trash are dumped into the ocean on a daily basis and all of that is produced by human.
Also, plastic is the most common element that is found in the ocean. It is harmful for the environment as it does not get break down easily and is often considered as food by marine animals.

As over 70% of the earth is covered with water, people actually assumed that all pollutants would be diluted and get disappeared. But in reality, they have not disappeared and their effects can be easily seen as they have entered the food chain.

And at the end I will write some facts in hope I will wake up your conscience about oceans and nature all in all. That you need to keep it clean and you need to take care about it because you are the part of it.

  • One hundred thousand sea mammals are killed in the ocean by pollution each year
  • Over one million seabirds are killed by ocean pollution each year
  • There is an island of garbage twice the size of Texas inside the Pacific Ocean
  • Three hundred thousand dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets, among other items

As I live in a landlocked country, I dont have lot of opportunities to photograph oceans so these are not my photos but I put source links to photos. In the end, photos are not most important part of this post, its the message I wanted to send to you. I want to say big thanks to my Steemit friend @thi-js who gave me idea to write this post. :) Dont forget to leave an upvote and comment.. Also you can follow me for more photography work ;)
