In the United States, it is quite popular for couples to light a unit candle at a wedding ceremony. This is to symbolize the union of the bride and groom becoming one in commitment.

Recently, I worked at a wedding ceremony in Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, followed by a dinner in the afternoon, when the sun had set. So beautiful and romantic. I was surprised to see a jug and 2 tall glasses with colored sand in the center of the stage. The groom's mother explained that the sand was to replace the candle in the unit.

The couple decided on the sand because the sea breeze could extinguish the candle several times during the ceremony. Wise choice. The bride wanted blue since it is her favorite color and also represents the color of the sky and the sea. The boyfriend opted for red since both colors contrast and combine very well. The colored sand was prepared at home while the neutral sand was collected on the beach just before the ceremony. As the newlyweds pour the sand into the vase, the colored grains of sand combine in a new color to symbolize the merging of both families into a new family. And as the couple begins their journey toward marriage as husband and wife, these grains of sand symbolize love, strength and commitment.
