I'm glad you like it, most people see an insect and say "how gross?!" before even really looking at the thing. The flesh flies though...yeah, they're gross!

That one is so furry at it's tiny scale. It does have some attitude! I wonder what kinds of tree it bores into. Borers are so challenging to deal with when they attack trees that we care about -- peach tree borers in individual peach trees at home, or the emerald ash borer in all the ash trees in the eastern US. But they are beautiful animals, especially up close like your image!

Thanks for the great comment! These one's appear to damage Cherry, Fig, and Wisteria among others. They can be quite devastating, the Asian Longhorn (not the one is this post) beetle is a problem in Western Canada.

The Asian Longhorn Beetle is such a problem, for sure. The threat of them moving into eastern Canada and Sugar Maple country will never end, now that they are in North America. Carrying firewood around when people travel to go camping is an easy way to spread them! It's great that you take such nice photos of borers -- it gets people interested in them and what they do. And then learn how to keep from spreading them around.

These guys are native here, so there's not much to be worried about, it's when they get into places where they have no natural predators that it becomes a problem.

They're pretty docile, but it you harass it enough they can bite in self-defense using jaws usually employed to cut through tree bark.
