As I have said before, these large dragonflies almost never sit; they only land to take shelter from wind and rain sometimes.
We had seen this one flying about yesterday, and at the first few drops of rain, there it went; it made a straight line for shelter and landed under some leaves, all 7.5cm (3") of it:

I'm not sure what species it is, most probably a female or young male blue hawker (Aeshna cyanea), blauwe glazenmaker in Dutch. Here's a photo of a male of that species I made two weeks ago:

It's really beautiful! My mum had these big ones flying around in her garden aswell, but I never did manage to take pictures of them (nor did I try very hard).

Wow this is beauty of life , look at the blue shades on that dragon fly , and the other so green it's transparent wings. First time seeing such a close up on it , u are lucky to have witnessed it twice . And thanks for providing info about it .

Hi, I think you are right. This should be Aeshna cyanea! Where did you take this picture? If you are unsure with identification it is always nice to know, where the animal was seen =) The dragonfly looks fresh, because the wings are still shiny.
Both are nice pictures and I can't wait longer for the next dragonflyseason to start.
