Cars in the wild: a Saab

in photography •  8 years ago  (edited)

This Saab was in the very wild wild; it looked abandoned and not in driveable condition.

It's a Saab 96; it was manufactured from 1960 to 1980, and it was the model that made Saab well-known all over the world. It's a reliable and strong car and it won many rallies in the 1960s and 1970s.

I managed to find the owner of this one, and he said he was about to start restauring it (yay!). He owns six Saabs, and three of this type.

Saab Automobile AB doesn't exist anymore, but Saabs still have a a large cult following.

Previous car in the wild: A Renault.

Thanks for the tip, but I don't like to talk about myself much, or even identify myself cross-platform. If people want to, my identity can easily be verified because I host my pictures on my own server, ocrdu (or odu without the middle names) are my initials and I am very google-able under my full name 8-).

@ocrdu - I get you there and it's a tough thing to do but - it sure helps. Hey - it isnt a must I suppose, Im not really sure whether its a must - from what i know there's no rule here. Keep steemin!

I owned one of those. I bought it new in Denver Colorado in 1971. It cost me <$1800. It was a great car.

A past tense there; I don't suppose you still own it?

Nope...sadly.
I'm no mechanic.
After I lefter Denver (never to return) I couldn't' find anyone to work on it...so I sold it to a shade tree mechanic.

Wish I hadn't.
That thing was a high mpg tank.

I so love the unique looks that the older cars had. Today, I can hardly distinguish on from another.

True that. And many new ones are fugly, I think design panic has set in.
Also, I used to be able to tell cars apart by ear, but they all sound the same to me now.

That's a real good car! I am almost sure it's a 1976 , the first with that kind of bumper. It had a V4 engine by Ford. Earlier SAAB had a 3-cylinder 2-stroker with the very special sound I love so much!

Btw, did you know that SAAB was originally an airplane company, called Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget? Their name later became SAAB and Saab AB.

I think SAAB went bankrupt a while back. Love to see an old Lada in the wild. I look forward to more if you can find them??

Plenty of nice old cars around here, but many only drive about in summer. I'll post them when I see them.
How old do you like your Ladas? Here is one on a photo by @xcepta.

Communist era Ladas please 1970-1989 ;) I'll check out your link. Thanks.

lol :D I just drove that thing 2 days ago

8-) Photo?

Don't have one. It's not what I consider a rare sight or a beauty :D
Although I spot them less and less with each year.

I'll do my best to photograph one. I think I saw a Lada 1200 (VAZ 2101) driving around town the other day, but I couldn't get a picture.

Maybe you should've been @ladahunter ! ;) Ha ha! @mindhunter

=D
