Caterpillars: Lackey Moth

in photography •  7 years ago

This is the very colourful caterpillar of the lackey moth (Malacosoma neustria), ringelrups in Dutch.

It is found across Europe, Asia and North Africa, most often along the edges of woodland and hedgerows, and in bushy grassland and orchards. In decline in large parts of Europe, it is doing fairly well in The Netherlands.

Its caterpillar is about 60mm (2.4") long, and one of the most spectacular ones in The Netherlands:

The moth is rather less colourful:

Gorgeous caterpillar...looks iridescent. The moth looks like it has an 80's hairdo. :) Thanks for sharing!

8-) It does, needs slightly bigger shoulder pads though.

Ah yes, I missed that little detail. :)

Here's an unrelated question...how do you get the caption text so small under your photos? I have looked through the Markdown Styling Guide but couldn't find any info there.

It's the HTML code for superscript: Text gives Text.

Aha! Thank you so much!

Thanks! But only the first one is mine.

awwww so cute creature :)

Great colors on the caterpillar! Do you know if the underside of the moth's wings are brightly colored?

They are the same colour as the top. No bright colours on this moth.

Wow @ocrdu I see the wonders of photography through this post of yours
Please which device did you use to capture?
