Damselflies: Deep Red

I posted about the small red damselfly yesterday; the other red species here in The Netherlands is called, as you may have guessed, large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula), vuurjuffer in Dutch.

They stare back at you sometimes:

The females are less red and usually have a yellow shoulder stripe:

These two are depositing eggs on peat moss. The male hangs on to the female after mating to prevent other males from mating with her and for protection while she is vulnerable:
