Two views from The Netherlands into Germany I photographed yesterday. I was standing near an old smuggler's path through the peat bog. The stone pillar in the photos is a border marker.
I like the emptiness and quietness here. No people, no sounds, just the odd bird passing by.

We still have nation states, and different laws apply on different sides of the border, even with free movement of people and goods. Also, what with my family history, the German border still has a whole other meaning as well, but let's not go there.

It's not the current crop of Germans I'm worried about, I live 3 miles from the German border, I know many people there, and I like them, not that that is any guarantee, of course. It's just the old family associations the German border brings.

I'm fairly twisted, and I have to agree with that post. The Donald is a narcissistic sociopath, interested more in his own image than anything else. He's quite dumb, too. Hitler was an idealogue, so he was more dangerous. Trump is a fool who could get us into a war out of his stupidity.

I was the only odd bird I could see up close but didn't, for want of a mirror. Now I'm not sure anymore if "the odd bird" is a British English colloquialism not understood in the colonies, or that you were being punny.
