Poor Man's Peat Bog

in photography •  7 years ago

The title is the literal translation of the Dutch Armenveen, which is a part of the Haaksbergerveen in the east of The Netherlands.

The peat bogs were owned collectively by groups of farmers, who mined peat here for heating their houses. The peat in the Armenveen was of inferior quality, so they let the poor people get peat there for free.

This is how it looks now (well, looks in summer):

The little farm house in this posting is not far from here, in a slightly more forested area.

Here in Ireland families too had (and still have) their peat bogs. Used to bring it down in baskets on the backs of donkeys, but since tractors are used now we have so many redundant donkeys! You can buy them for a fiver! Doesn't seem right somehow, though I don't believe in animal slaves so better to be redundant than worn out :-)

Mainly carts and horses here, and later one tiny rail track with horse-drawn carts. No donkeys, I don't think. I wonder why not. Hm.

Oh, I love the freshness of the spring and the beautiful daffodils as the winter turns the bog to the ways of spring.

Beautiful.

It is nice, isn't it? Big contrasts though; it is incredibly dreary there now.

I will bet you can find some beauty in there!!! :)
