The Spider That Can Follow You Anywhere (and does)

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

This is about the raft spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus), gerande oeverspin in Dutch.

These spiders are quite big, as spiders in The Netherlands go, at about 25mm (1"), with a leg span of about 60mm (2.4").

Despite their size and weight, they can walk on water very well, in fact, they can run very fast on water. Quite a sight to see when one passes in front of you when you are swimming. They also seem to be curious, as they sometimes run straight at you, and then stop and observe, like this one did:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/125s

They can also dive, so there really is no escaping these. Think of that the next time you decide to have a swim in open water.

Now go read and resteem The Church of Piglet's Guidelines for the Little Steemian, and receive a free blessing that will keep the spiders away. No guarantees, no refunds.

Wait, we have these in holland?
I did see the "jumping spiders" before.

Yes, we do.

Very cool, will have to go out and find them sometime, never seen them during my fishing trips.

They mainly live around acidic (peat) bogs, and there's not much good fishing there. You may get lucky and see one elsewhere, though.

Remember to keep my mouth closed. lol

A very nice photo you took, but I will never go swimming in Holland. I would not be happy if I suddenly saw one of those approaching me. lol.

We do have some very fine swimming pools 8-).

guaranteed spider free? lol, then I may risk it.

Great pic.......But what a creepy spider! That would freak me out! Especially that they can even walk on water!

Congratz, your post has been resteemed and, who knows, will maybe appear in the next edition of the #dailyspotlights (Click on my face if you want to know more about me...)

I'm so scared with spider! Dont like me

This one is European, so no worries finding one in Venezuala. I'm sure you have other spiders, though.

Yes sure haha! Don't like any spider

Brrr, this is so creepy!

These are present in Hungary as well, but they mainly live around acidic bogs and in wet acidic grassland, so they are easily avoided. Or easily found, if you want to see one 8-).

Excellent image, the glow of the water helps a lot to highlight the spider, congratulations.

Thank you.

Big and terrible :)))

Gorgeous shot, my friend! This spider is so skillfully standing on the water :)

Thank you! I was glad it had stopped running 8-).

Scary but gorgeous! I'm so fascinated by insects and arachnids! Not sure if I'd like to have this beastie around me when I swim in the lake but still fascinated by it! Cool picture too, did you take it?

Yes, all photos I post are mine, unless otherwise noted.

Awesome!
