Actually, it's just a less-common variety of crane fly.

Nice one. F5.6 could be lower for nice bokeh

Anything lower than f5.6 would have put parts of the insect out of focus, and I didn't want that. Also, the quality of the bokeh wouldn't have changed much, just the depth of field. These days, many photographers have become obsessed with bokeh (which they often incorrectly use as a synonym for depth of field) to the point they forget to properly render the subject they are shooting. Anyone can make a picture with a shallow depth of field, just open the lens wide, but getting the depth of field exactly as you want it takes skill, especially with macro shots. I'm not interested in taking pictures of insects that look like two eyes in a field of blur. Focussing on the eyes with your lens wide open is for portraits, not insects and the like. I'm very stubborn when resisting photographic fads 8-).
