COMBINATION PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST FROM @PAPA-PEPPER – WEEK 2

in photography •  7 years ago

Well steemians, it seems like a lot of you enjoyed this new contest and I was amazed by a lot of the entries that came in, but do you know what that means?

It means that I’ll keep running this contest for the time being. You know that @papa-pepper really enjoys plants and animals, so what better photography contest could he run than one where others get to photograph plants and animals together, in some combination photography?

EXAMPLES

Before I get into who won the contest last week, I’ll quickly review what I am looking for by featuring some new photos of mine.

First off, by combination photography I mean that you should combine two elements; plants and animals. At least one plant and at least one animal should be featured in your photo. Here are two examples.

Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly on flower

Blue Spotted Salamander on moss

Besides simply providing the images, I also require that those entering this contest provide a proof photo as well. Two main versions of proof photos exist. One kind features the same combination of plants & animals with a written paper in the photo with your username, the date, contest name, etc. to prove that you took the photo for the contest.

The other type of proof is just a selfie with the animal and plant. Here are my examples for the photos featured above.

Once you see the proof photos there should not be any doubt in your mind that I actually took the photos I shared above.

THE WINNERS!

As always, this was tough for me, but I have finally made my decisions. The Winner gets 50% of the liquid post payout from the Week One Post and the two runner ups each get 12.5% of the same.

THE WINNER

@digitalis

18.49 SBD

FIRST RUNNER UP

@heart-to-heart

9.24 SBD

SECOND RUNNER UP

@stresskiller

9.24 SBD

Obviously, there were many more original entries and for that I am most thankful. It is great to see so much talent and variety within the community. Although the official way to enter this contest is by including your entry photo and the proof photo in a reply to my post, I strongly encourage others to make an actual post featuring their entry as well.

Even if you do not win the contest, you could still get something for your effort if you turn it into a post as well. @Matthewtiii even had his post get a total payout of over $70, which is more than he would have made by actually winning this contest! That is the power of steemit! In fact, once he had a contest post get a total payout of over $200 when he was trying to win 5 STEEM in a contest that I was running, LOL! Link here.

ON TO WEEK 2!

By now you should have a clue about what this contest is and how to enter, but here are the official rules just to make sure. Enjoy, and I am looking forward to seeing what you can come up with.

HERE ARE THE OFFICIAL RULES:

  • Photo entries must be placed in the reply/comment section of this post.
  • Submissions may also be made into posts, but it is not necessary.
  • A proof photo will also be required. This can be in the form of a selfie with the subjects from the photos or in the form of your username written on a piece of paper in a photo, etc. Basically, you must prove the originality of your work. Therefore, your entry comment should include two photos.
  • Users have between now and the time of the post payout to enter this contest.
  • I will personally select one winner to award half of the liquid SBD payout from this post to and two runner ups who will each get 25% of the same.
  • Enter as many times as you like!
  • Depending on the interest in this contest, I may have it be ongoing.

TL;DR

If you reply to this post with a photo of a plant and animal together and include a proof photo before the post payout from this post, you may win a portion of the post payout.

LET THE 2ND WEEK OF THE CONTEST BEGIN!!!

Until next time…

Wonderful! I love them. I took similar photos earlier myself, but with a Bumblebee on purple flowers!

am glad you put up a 2nd one!
resteemed!
congrats to all the winners!
I'm happy that mathewtii (the pepper eating king here) is still alive and kickin' I mean that account :D

Thanks for thinking of me.

you were gone for quite some time :)

@papa-pepper WOW! I am so thrilled to have been chosen! I guess that little guy was lucky after all ;) I mentioned this before but just want to send a huge thank you for sparking interest in the natural world. I remember when I first joined 2 months ago, someone told me that because I was here to kind of encourage people back to nature, (as I am a homesteader myself) to get in touch with you, so I did and at that time had no idea what you're doing for the community! I think it's fantastic! I'm thrilled that my love for plants and animals gets me through the lack of photography skills. I just picked up my camera recently.

BTW, as I was writing this, we had a surprise visitor. I could only use my phone so sadly, the quality doesn't match my camera but here's some of what went down. I am positive he was after your attention:

spidey papa.jpg

I have a video of this as well. Mostly of him pointing his long arm-link things at me, then him jumping onto my computer, off of it, onto me and it's quite the ruckus. All because he wanted to be noticed by you! =D

Looking forward to this week's challenge, with love and gratitude,

@heart-to-heart

Hmmm..... a pepper is a plant too, and that is an animal... Got a proof selfie? LOL!

Nice entry on the win! I am glad that you appreciate my efforts here.

I have a video of him and I having fun? Does that count? Can try to edit it into a still... ;) He thought it funny to continually scare me for about an hour following, every time I thought he was gone he would pop right back onto my screen or my glass... I think I need to learn your critter whispering skills =D

hahahhaha wow this is awesome!!!!
Seems like a potential winner to me!

Greetings!

I finally got an entry into your contest and even though the one I just got that I really wanted to submit didn't work because lack of proof photo I got another cool one with proof!

Thanks for running so many cool contests and helping this community out so much. You truly are a Steemit Hero!

SteemON!

Hey @papa-pepper, thought I would try this another time 'round. Got a cool one for you ;) I know the laptop one was decent and all but I couldn't get it up close and personal enough for my liking! Check this guy out!
Here's my post with a bunch more shots of him!

I'm hoping someone knows what it is =D

Also caught this one, the flowers were in the web!
IMG_9018 (2).JPG
These spiders can be massive and are always seen dangling around in their webs, I don't dare get much closer than this ;)
IMG_9022_LI.jpg

Aren't those proof photos fun to take?

Fun.... yes... sure ;) You're much more brave than I sir, I am still working on touching all the critters that I see you with on a regular basis =D

Hope these aren't too late!!

I loved this one with the yellow jacket taking flight. She was very willing to let me get close...but when I bumped the leaves she decided to LEAVE.

And these are some fantastic bonus... This maybe a baby of the praying mantis I previously photographed and featured.... Yay!! Our Praying Mantis population is doing well!!

thx for sharing

@stresskiller, how did you get your background blacked out like that? Was the photo taken at night? And if so, what kind of flash/lighting did you use to get your shot?

Good question, that background is striking against the insect.

I'm also interested in the answer to this...

I tried to find these bugs this morning but was unable to locate any. However, this afternoon I was able to find several of them. They seem to love sitting on the Swiss Chard.

Glad to see you have decided to continue the combination contest! I was really bummed that I was too busy to enter last week, but I get the day off work tomorrow and I plan on exploring for the better part of the day! Hope to come up with a contribution to your contest :)

Yes! Glad to hear it! You both should try to see what you can come up with!

nice one Digitalis, lovely blue color

I did follow your tips and reduced the flash EV.

Excellent proof and great entry!

This one was soooo close to placing....

Great opportunity.

That it is. It is also a great chance for people struggling to get good payouts to potentially make some SBD too!

going on my evening bike ride I came across these nice animals and had to think of your contest @papa-pepper
the only thing was that in the previous one there was a lot of focus on all the insects and the plants they sit on
I am going in another direction with an animal that eats those plants (and sometimes the insects as well I guess) This is a really beautiful example of the Swiss Cow, they have the most amazing color.
and then a little farther on my ride i found its hi tech cousin and had to put him in as well...

and here i am making silly faces in front of the cows...
and here is the hi tech cow cousin

and to end it all here is a link of the post on my blog if you want to also place your upvote there they are more then welcome, thanks in advance https://steemit.com/photography/@felander/my-take-on-combination-photography-contest-from-papa-pepper-week-2

STEEM ON

Very wild entries... (You, not the cows!) Love the cousin too!

That's one of my friends!

My entry Photo by sard@rt

A great entry, potentially even a winner, but do you have a proof photo? You cannot win without it.

This one would have placed in the top 3 if you would have included a proof photo.

it was nice, but i think google had it!

Nice contest @papa-pepper!

I Enjoy your contest. Thank you very much. Congratulation for the winners.

Great to see you win!
You are truly a great photographer!

Thank you my friend :)

Keep up the great work!
I am sure you will win many a more photo contests!

My first entry to this contest:
IMG_3970crop.JPG

The above image is a very ripe blackberry that has been broken apart to reveal the maggots living within. I suppose these maggots are from fruit flies, but I'm just guessing. I can't imagine what other fly would lay its eggs in berries. All that extra protein we likely don't even know we are eating!

IMG_3971.JPG

Proof of having made the image myself.

I'm glad that one was photographed, and not eaten. Based on the size of the maggot, I'd agree with your guess.

That looks like the animal poop that was deposited on my deck yesterday by an unidentified culprit.

A raccoon perhaps?

That was my prime suspect since nothing else except maybe a small fox could've gotten in.

Awesome one!

Thank-you!

This is my third entry! This contest is so enjoyable.

IMG_6242.JPG

That is striking! I love it!

Thank you!!! I am beyond stoked that my entry was first runner up! ❤️ I have so much fun participating in this contest!

That beautiful butterfly was around those flowers for a long time! Long enough for me to get a beautiful shot, write on my pinky, and take a proof shot, and just watch it for a while. I felt pretty lucky!

That is a gorgeous butterfly! Wow!!

Thank you!!! I was so happy to be able to capture that!

Wow - that is a most beautiful butterfly! Thanks for sharing it with us :)

Thank you! We have several flower varieties, in our yard, that attract butterflies. It never gets old to capture a photos of them.

Thank you @papa-pepper

This one was soooo close to placing.... Please keep it up! I'll do the post later!

Thanks @papa-pepper ,i always do an effort for this contest of you bro!

I am gonna work on getting an entry in this weekend. I should have some time to go out tomorrow and Sunday for a bit to get some nature photos. I already have an idea of my subject matter too

Glad to hear it!

I was hoping to have time today to get out and get some photos if I find the time it will be just before dark, but tomorrow I am gonna spend half the day out taking photos so if I don't get it tonight, it will be tomorrow.

That is a beautiful salamander! Is it an Arkansas native?

This one was up in Wisconsin.

Most of the ones I find in Arkansas look like the black and yellow one above.

awesome and amazing post

Thank you for the information .. this is good news .. hopefully many who ngevoted you .. follow me maybe we can be friends well

The winners of this contest had beautiful pictures!

Yes they did.

Great job @stresskiller!

Wow ! awesome contest ...Can i join this contest ? Thank you @papa-pepper

You can join! Just follow the rules.

This looks so fun i most enter soon

How fun was this post!!!!! I loved all of the pics :) Congrats everyone!! SUNSHINE247

Nice photographer Thanks you

Those were very well deserved winners. Congratulations. The one by @digitalis was my personal favorite as well. Spiders are just gorgeous if people get past the "It's a spider" stigmata.

Hopefully the weather will clear up one of these days and I can go photo hunting again. I had so much fun on the last one. The proof is so much more challenging than the photo itself!

Yes, the proof is a tough one, and sometimes should even be the first photo so you don't miss your chance.

So so so true!
Exemplified!

ooohhh papa , i don't look this contest maybe for next i will participate for your contest

You can join all week if you can find an animal and a plant to photograph.

How to join papa ?

I would like to join your contest and I have some pictures of bug and bees on flowers but...how can I take a selfie with the bees? 😄. It's really hard to make them stay still 😂🤣
https://steemit.com/photography/@dewdrop/summer-flowers-4

A selfie with a bee shouldn't bee that hard... You can even fly a bee if you know how...

Omg! You're so brave. No, thanks. I'm scared 😓😟

Hahahahah awesome!

My 2nd entry into the contest:
IMG_3979crop.JPG

This image is of a pill bug, along with Purslane and what I believe is some sort of Lichen. If anyone can definitely identify it, that would be appreciated.

IMG_3980.JPG

My proof of work.

I was wondering what that was in the corner... could be a lichen... we will see if anyone knows.

Not sure what it is. We get it, or something similar, in some spots, especially where roof drip hits. But I don't think lichen because it is so green.

Not an entry into the contest, but simply to show the amount of Purslane growing in my greenhouse along with tomatoes and swiss chard.
IMG_3982.JPG

Very cool! (In an edible "weed" sort of way.)

With its relatively shallow roots, I don't think it hurts the tomatoes and I get to feed many of my neighbours with the purslane. Funny how some either like it or they hate it.

Excellent article

Congrats winners! Thanks for the mention @papa-pepper!

At least your post won!

Keep them coming!

Right! I will!

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

Coolio, i like this contest. Will see what I can do this week.

Might have to just photograph my housemate in his natural habitat ;)

Beside a plant of course

Give it a go! Thanks @jaybird!

Lul magnificent creatures :O ty

Really love the winner photo. You chose well.

Hey, nice idea for contest!

I thought so!

I agree!

This is absolutely amazing !! wow these are some unbelievable shots..right up my ally. that spider is freakin gorgeous . I'm just excited to finally be a part of something so beautiful and creative :) I can't wait to participate ! @papa-pepper its a pleasure to meet you.

Nice to meet you too! Please do find something to photograph and enter!

I absolutely will :) it has to be insects or ??? Sorry still figuring this all out lol

nice

Moth.png

It was very still so I was happy to be able to put my tab by it. Sadly, it turned out that the moth is no longer with us.

Currently he's in a plastic bag hanging on the microwave wall for future use.

Oh no! Looks like it was a hawk moth.

What will you use it for??

LOL that's a good question. I think I may have it travel the region with me and be photographed in various places.

Careful with having it in a closed baggy. If all it's insides aren't dried up it might mold and rot. But cool idea!!

Here's my entry for this round. Cape Dwarf Chameleon on a Bitou bush. https://steemit.com/chameleon/@whistlejacket/cape-dwarf-chameleon

One of my favorite animals that I have never met in the wild.... You almost placed in the top 3 last time with your beautiful green beetle, perhaps your beautiful green lizard will get you in this time!

Bugs. What can I say.

SteemON!

Yeah, looks like this one may keep running!

Great!
Happy to participate and promote.

This is cool. I don't suppose a free-range child and a dandelion will cut it will it?
Resteemed. I will see what I can do.

BIG THANKS, @Papa-Pepper for this awesome contest!

Very cool! I like it!

Thanks @papa-pepper. Might have to try flying one (nice video p.s.). Can't say that I've ever done that with a bee. Horse flies work well, but never tried a bee before.

Proof is a little out of focus, but I was afraid it would fly away.

I am glad that you are enjoying the adventure!

I've just started reading your novel as well, I'm only three chapters in but I'm hooked. You are so talented! Thanks again and hope you are having another epic day with the family!!

Hi @papa-pepper , I decided to do another entry, hope that is OK. Found this poor little Brown marmorated stink bug on my front step. It is native to Asia and consider an invasive species in North America.

Looking like a stink bug angel :(

The images are much nicer up close on the blog post. :D

Again, thanks for this fun contest. I really enjoyed looking at all the other entries as well! <3

The images in the reply here are how to enter, so thanks for that.

Posts are unnecessary to enter, but still a good idea. I'll check it out!

Darn, I have this really great photo of beetles eating my roses but can't do a proof since the roses have since been entirely eaten. I guess I'll have to come up with something else.

Yes, please come up with something else!

I tried but because I had to sit so far away from the little guy it didn't turn out that great. I'll submit another one soon!

My idea was to take a picture of the little chipmunk who lives on my deck in front of his timothy grass. I keep that grass there just for him as he lived on my deck in the same spot for a few years now.

You can see the video of my attempt and the resulting chipmunk adventure here: https://steemit.com/dtube/@xeonn/1kkdiqyn

Still a good effort. I tried some of a chipmunk the other day with varying results.

Entry 3)

I added a red circle in my proof photo to make it easier to find them there. I hope that's okay.

If you want to see them larger than they show up in these replies, you can see https://steemit.com/photography/@bex-dk/papa-pepper-combo-contest-2-entries

Cool! Thanks!

Entry 2)

Cool! Only just seen this but nature is my thing so I'll look forward to next week :)......though I might go out in the dark tonight and see what I can find lurking in the garden!

Here is this weeks entry:

Mission complete - holding a torch whilst taking a photo in the dark with both the subject matter and your finger in it is possible! Found a few sleepy garden insects but this was my favourite.

Loving the shiny gold bit on this fly too. Can't quite work out if it's the reflection from the torch.

...and finally an out of focus finger......

Thanks @papa-pepper for organising another great contest on steemit.

HOLY cannoli! Great shots man!! Its eyes look like jewels!

Thank you! All insects look awesome close up but they all seemed to positively gleam at night. I'm gonna have to do some more night macro in the garden :)

Haha, well it's a feat to be able to hold a light and camera, AND also your verification, to take a pic!

..and entertaining for the neighbours I think on a rainy night. Ha ha :)

Thank you for entering!

It was fun! If you continue the contest I think I'll challenge myself to go out wherever I am when I see your post and see what combo I can find within 10mins. What more could an ecologist on a home-making career break ask for than another excuse to stop everything and find wildlife?! :)

Nice one

Great works, I wish you success

I wish all who enter success. Only a few of them were my photos, the rest were winning entries from others.

hahaha I see ur giving these copy paste folks some feedback on this thread ;-)>

the great post

Combination of different colors how is it ? @papa-pepper :)

camera Samsung s6 <3

The photo does have a combination of different colors, but this contest is for combining animals and plants, like all of the photos in it.

okay i will give my best :)
