TRYING TO GET ONE OF A KIND ARMADILLO PHOTOS

in photography •  7 years ago

You have no idea how hard getting a shot like that can be.

While I was driving back from the land yesterday, I noticed an interesting text that I had missed from my neighbor. It read, "Armadillo art North grapes." It took a little descrambling, but I was soon heading towards the vineyard nearby for a peek. Sure enough, there in the field, was an armadillo. Soon I was crawling across the field on my belly with my new camera in my hand.

STILL FIGURING THINGS OUT

At first I tried sneaking close and taking some photos, but even at only 20 feet away, the results were not exactly stellar. I'll figure things out eventually, but for now, let's just say that I am glad that I am @papa-pepper. I resorted back to my old ways, set down the camera, and took off on foot. Soon, I had captured the armadillo. As I was walking back, I noticed something interesting.... another armadillo. Once again, I set the camera back down and took off. Soon, I had one in each hand.

BEING RESOURCEFUL

This was another opportunity when having helpful children comes in handy. Since armadillos can carry leprosy, I wasn't about to have anyone else hold them still. So, I handed the camera to our oldest daughter, Pinkie-Pepper, and let her work on taking some shots. While the seven year old may not have the same "eye" for a stellar shot that I do, there is no time like the present to practice!

Personally, I think that she did pretty good. I may still try to find a way to take my own photos of the pair, but I'm not sure how to pull it off yet. I'll keep you posted!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Armadillos eat grubs, worms and insects. With terrible eyesight they rely on using their sense of smell to hunt and those ears won't just be radiators. So, spread a load of foodstuffs in a relatively confined area, stand downwind from them and whilst they're feasting, snap away. Hopefully, shots of them feeding will suffice.

Leprosy's curable these days, btw. You just need to get diagnosed early. Good luck with the photos.

Yeah, I found that out after I learned about it the first time. Good advice on getting some more shots!

Hey big papa-pepper I don't know anyone else to turn to, can you please help me by consider delegating to me on the MB market some small ammount of SP for two weeks? Thanks

I dont delegate... Not sure who you should ask.

Hi @papa-pepper,

Such an extensive blog on Armadillos!

Thanks :)

Basically trying to share a few good photos my daughter took.

Hard, but worth it.
Pictures look amazing with all the details.
Resteemed!

Thanks! I'm glad that I can catch them and my daughter knows how to use a camera!

Yeah it can be hard to get good pics of wildlife. Like this guy... he was too cold to gaf tho

A new day a new adventure

There is no place for boredom if you are @papa-pepper

Ps: What are you going to do with those armadillos?

We relocated them, as they can do a lot of damage to gardens, plus they have the potential to carry leprosy.

post is very interesting will i resteem. @papa-pepper

Nice, exellence pics 💪☺️

Darn Papa-P, The Crocodile hunters got nothin on you! Nice shots!

I've heard that before, but I'm not saying that I agree! ;-)

goldmatters An armadillo is not likely to chew you up as a snack if you mess up the catch, a saltie on the other hand...you may not have another hand after meeting one of them!

Nice catch nonetheless Papa.

Nice picture. Nice work bro.

If those are her shots, she did dang well!

They certainly are!

Maybe a camera is in her future?

Oh my goodness! Those are incredible pictures!
Great post!

Amazing to see armadillos so close in details! And you got two :D I was also super excited spotting an echidna crossing the road a few days ago =)

Echidnas are really awesome creatures.

What an adventure! Pinkie-pepper should enter combination photography contest with these amazing photos. Armadillos on the grass... she would be the winner for sure. Even though she used a top notch armadillo wrangler, she frame it and click at the perfect moments!

That sounds rigged, plus she missed the proof. Lol

Oh yeah the proof... you got me!

LOL!

I suppose you have zoom lens because for up close shots of wildlife you definitely need it. I have to say that your daughter have photographers eye! When she took over photos improved dramatically 😉

She did do a great job! Thanks!

Awwww, did she really take the pictures now? Honestly she did pretty good I must say. And pepper thought you said they can carry leprosy? Common!! You are holding on to them in one picture...ewwww I have being reading some of your previous post... Honestly, you love the wild and I think you really love all them animals. The armadillos are cute!!!

Well done Pinkie-Pepper, you will be replacing Papa as the photographer in the family soon.

LOL - She'd done good so far!

Now you are new and flash, give Pinkie your old camera and teach her how to use it.
As you proved today it is handy to have a good backup.
It will also be good on little- peppers as well.

wow excellent photography @papa-pepper. thanks for sharing. i like your post and following.

What fascinating creatures! They are so freaky looking, I love em.

I think the photos turned out great. Your kid should be proud!

@papa-pepper Next time trying filming it in times-lapse setting. lol
In my case for every 100 pic you get one good one :) Best wishes to you always!

Good idea!

hey @papa-pepper! such a fun strange fact about armadillos spreading leprosy-- I remember hearing that for the first time after my science teacher tossed a stuffed armadillo at a kid in class.

keep encouraging your daughter in that photography--she will get her own eye for shots before too long!

I know it was very hard buh u did tired. Good work done

Those things are so crazy! I would love to see one up close like that. :)

I've got your address... perhaps I'll ship you one!

Haha! No thanks, I'm fine without leprosy.

Okay, just checking....

Wow, amazing photo. Great job.

so strange animals , i have never seen it before. thanks for your sharing .

Phenomenal job! I love the photos! Armadillos are more than cool and so are you! I wanted to stop by! I hope all is well my Friend! Positive Energy! Blessed 2018! :)

I know that you say it wasn't easy, but as an animal lover, I would love to have seen more photos of them...Stil, this are great
They're awesome!

That's amazing how they seem so calm together. Almost looks like a mating pair. Personally I don't know how to tell the difference between a male and female armadillo. But they definitely both seem calm together. Perhaps you might consider wearing gloves with the leprosy risk :0

Personally I don't know how to tell the difference between a male and female armadillo.

You have to peek underneath to tell them apart. You'd know the difference.

We had them i our country too.But now it has become very rare :/And I did not know that they are a carrier of leprosy
So thank you very much for sharing this with us
-cheers-

wow you a very lucky one..as i know that animal is an endangered one in the IUCN red book..im sure though..anyway nice click of the animal

Amazing photos. I haven't seen armadillos in real life. They look quite small compared to you! I thought they would be bigger

So nice of having this close to your home! And for the children it is always good to have the chance of learning something different or new.
I'm curious whether the skin of armadillos is hard like an armor or is soft but with an average quantity of skin for protection.?
Thanks for sharing!

Oh no! Armadillo Escape! Grab the fishing net and the sack. Come on Blizzard, we have to catch Guido!

Nic

Great photos by the youngun. Fabulous little animals. What's a case of leprosy between friends. It'll just leave you disarmed and armless to them...

I think Pinkie-Pepper did an extraordinarily good job taking the photos. You can tell her I said so. Perhaps she'll be wanting a camera soon too. Our friend has both armadillos and ant eaters as pets. Folks here eat them in stew and he thought they would make nice additions to his garden instead of the stew pot.

Are armadillos destructive? I've seen a couple of posts over the last few months about people getting rid of them.

Living in Northern Canada, I've never had to deal with them on a farm. What sort of damage do they do?

She got some great shots! When in doubt, snap a lot and sort them later!

Hahaha. Man. This post was right before my time here on steemit. What's going on with the Armadillo posts. There must be a secret message hidden here. Let me study this deeply ;)

armidillos are LIFE! haha... <3

wow. that's cool.
