WILD PHOTOGRAPHY - Pterophylla camellifolia

The Common True Katydid

I was blessed to find this super-cool creature yesterday. We got to hang out for a while, so I was able to take some photos of it in a few places as it explored the yard. One of the things that really impressed me about it was its eyes. They are super cool to look at and a brilliant yellow in color.

I also appreciate how its wings are designed to look like leaves. It is such excellent camouflage for a magnificent creature. It is nice to live in the day and age of digital photography, as so many of my shots did not turn out very well. These are the ones that I thought you would appreciate though. Enjoy!

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

followed you. follow me :)

Very cool macro pictures, isn't it a grasshopper?

Cheers!

Nope, it's a Katydid. It's a leaf bug that "sings" in the trees of the Gulf States mostly.

Didn't know that, but now I do. Thanks for sharing!

You're very welcome

great shoot @papa-pepper

Nice photography.

Creative piece,am pretty looking forward to explore the wild and nature extensively.Post resteemed and upvoted with $3.Thanks for the chat and advice@papa-peper.......... @detycoon

You are welcome @detycoon!

in one shot the eye's looked like it was looking up or had yellow upper lids painted :) we don't have these types of grass hoppers in Canada I don't think well not with leaf shaped wings at least :) thanks for sharing

They eyes are very interesting indeed.

That's a huge grasshopper 😲, kinda makes me want to go to my backyard to see what bugs I can find hehehe, well saludos from Mexico 🙋

Thanks, get out there, who knows what you will find!

Love the pictures @papa-pepper. What equipment do you use for those pictures?

It's excelent this post. I love the wild life and the images are great. Thank you for your post. :-)

Thank you for enjoying it!

Very good catch, I also agree with you that she is very beautiful. Very good eyes, and wings that mengkomuflase with leaves. At first glance if he hides among the leaves we can not figure it out. This kind of grasshoppers I've never seen before and I've never seen them. good work @papa-pepper

I am glad that you liked it!

Yes papa... I like it. Next i send You my photo

those are some nice clicks.

Thank you, it took me a while and a lot of crawling around on the ground, but the results are good!

hard work always pay :)

Really nice picture of leaves,..... ohh no wait it is actually a living creature. Good job catching pictures of it. Thanks for sharing

Lol, Thanks!

wow.. great capture.. micro photos are great .. we can see the hidden world. thanks

They are truly amazing creatures. Thanks!

Great pictures - particularly like the one with the sun coming in right over the katydid. Seeing your pics makes me think that I found a katydid in my yard a few weeks ago and misidentified it, I thought it was a nymphal grasshopper but it looks almost identical to this (minus the fully developed wings). The eyes are identical. Do you think this is a katydid? https://steemit.com/photography/@carlgnash/color-challenge-thursday-green

I am not sure, but it certainly could be. The eyes are very close, and yours looks like an adolescent. There are a lot of different species of Katydids, so it very well could be. I also found a "sword-bearing conehead" Katydid, which I'll post about tomorrow or so.

"sword-bearing conehead" Katydid - that is a contender for the "best name" insect team! If it looks half as cool as it sounds that is going to be an awesome post - looking forward to it!

Really a nice huge grasshopper
I love it!

Please do not make comments like that. People will probably downvote you for it.

Really beautiful .. thanks for the information .. hopefully we can cooperate .. follow me @riansteem .. may be a friend

The detailed description of grass hopper shows that you are a great Biologist ........

Oh, pequeño saltamonte! :D

That insect is a BIG NOPE! but the quality of your pictures is a BIG YES!

Last time was the stick insect, now the leaf bug.
They said that Katydid derived it's name from the sound that they make, a chirp like no other.

Is it true @papa-pepper? :)

Very nice macro shots. Funny, I just saw a headline that somewhere in the U.S. they released a large number of preying mantis to control another type of insect. Instead they started eating the HUMMING BIRD population...hard to play God haha.

https://www.treehugger.com/animals/praying-mantises-released-pest-control-are-hunting-hummingbirds.html

Hard to play God indeed, we always seem to screw it up!

NOOOOOOO! Stupid bureaucrats!

Ah the beautiful leaf bug responsible for singing forests. I'm of mixed feelings about not having them here ... instead we have singing savannah (there's a beetle that chirps away in our dry grass)

I love digital photography, the days of limited and expensive photo possessing are happily a thing of the past.

Those chemicals couldn't have been very good for the environment either.

nice photo

It is CRAZY how its wings look veiny just like leaves do. Evolution really did a great job on this specimen. Also I like the one where it has one hand (foot?) to it's mouth. Great photos!

wow really cool

Interesting photo .. i am waiting for the next photo @papa-pepper

hey papa, how is it going I will be papaluis soon ahahha :D

Good pictures you should make like a horror movie ahahah with giant looking insects and at the end you just stand giant :P
Soy tu tio

The Katydid sound I miss from the days of my childhood in the South. Nice post.

Those eyes appear to be staring straight thru my soul! LoL Great pics btw!

Nice pictures! Aren't they a cool bug?! I found one a couple years ago! I wish I could find another one... :)

What a cool looking insect. The wings really do look like leaves but I like the antennas they remind me of the stem of a leaf. And the mouth looks almost like mouth with teeth.

Nice shots, didn't know the name of that grasshopper. I use to see them in the backyard of our house in the province too.

It is tough getting those macro shots. I particularly like the photo of it cleaning its left foot.

Cool looking bug!

where does this creatures come from?

We in Pemon language name it Chiwa

Interesting and beautiful!

Katy looks rather angry... just look at the crossed eyes & baring teeth!

They can be rather threatening and menacing.
