Harvesting garlic at the allotment - When to harvest and how to cure them

I planted about 50 cloves last Autumn, now they are ready to harvest. slightly earlier this year.

These are the hardneck variety.When the bottom 2 sets of leaves go yellow or brown they are ready.

Garlic is more critical in picking the right time to harvest. more so than onions.
If you harvest too late the bulbs start to split open and they will not store as long.
Too early and the bulbs might not be fully formed.

As a guide they are usually ready 3 weeks after the garlic scapes form.

Use a fork to ease the earth up around the bulb, making sure you dont hit the bulb.

Next thing i do is put 2 pieces of string together high up in the shed...

Then hang the bulbs in the gap between the string

After a week you can cut the stems down to about 4 inch. Then let them continue curing for another 2 to 3 weeks.

This years crop look really good, some good sized bulbs. Pity i can't eat them atm as ive just been diagnosed with diverticulosis (bowel disease) and have been put on a low FODMAP diet which means i have to eliminate Garlic, Onions and Leeks from my diet for a month to 6 weeks. i also have to avoid many other things including wheat, dairy, gluten and fat.

I've also got to avoid peas and its looks like we'll have a bumper crop this year lol.
