A Photogram is an image created with traditional light sensitive materials but without using a camera.
Basicaly you place objects onto light sensitive paper and expose to light, in this tutorial we use the sun.
For an introduction to photograms try 'Sunprint' paper.
This paper is cheap, and easy to use.
You simply place objects onto your sunprint paper, in this case i have used feathers.
This sunprint pack comes with a piece of acrylic to place on top of your objects.
You then expose the paper to the sun. leave in the sun for up to 5 mins then wash under running water. simple.
"The areas of the paper exposed to the sun will fade from blue to white. When you see most of the color disappear from the paper, your print has been fully exposed." (instructions from sunprint)
I used the small pack to try out. the sheets are 10cm square (4 inch)
You can get a larger size.
sunprint also do 2 colours, this one is blue, they also do a green.
If you find you want to progress to more advanced options, i.e. sensitizing your own paper with chemicals and using a positive (slide) there are other kits such as Argyrotype, cyanotype, salt printing and van dyke printing. Each gives a different tone, colour and quality.
You can also print your own slides/negatives by printing onto digital contact/transfer film, such as fotospeed or permajet.
basically you can print a negative/positive as big as your printers max size.
Fotospeed do kits containing all you need for the different processes (including digital film)
Although once you know what you are doing you will find it cheaper to buy the sensitizer, paper and film seperately.
I will do more tutorials in the future for the other processes, inc ingredients without buying the kits.

Ooh what a fab idea for getting children into photography. I remember when my daughter was too young to operate a camera and how frustrated she was. She would have loved experimenting with this, and so simple too xx
