It is one of the most important tourist sites in the country and the arrival point of cruise ships that come from all over the world to know the Costa Rican beaches. In the past it was the most important port of export and could only be reached by ox carts or train, on a trip that lasted hours, even days. Nowadays, thanks to the improvements in the roads it is possible to arrive in little more than one hour from the capital San José.
