Zion National Park is a United States national park located in the state of Utah, near the town of Springdale. The total area comprises 593.26 km². The main attraction of the park is the Zion canyon, a cleft of 24 kilometers in length and up to 800 meters deep excavated by the north arm of the Virgin River on red sandstone terrain. Other points of interest are the Great White Throne, the Straits of the Virgin River and the Kolob Arch. In the area of the Zion and Kolob canyons are nine geological formations with an age of 150 million years, coming from settlements occurred during the Mesozoic Era. During all that time, the region has been covered by marshes, streams, ponds, lakes, vast deserts and dry beds. Elevations caused by the Colorado plateau raised the region about 3,000 m 13 million years ago.
