Abandoned casino in Constanta, Romania

in photography •  7 years ago

Today I am starting a new series called ‘Abandoned places in Romania’, so you can all enjoy the stories behind those incredible constructions that are now abandoned.

We start off with the Casino in Constanta, a famous tourist attraction nowadays. The casino was founded in 1910. Here, many love stories and tragedies were born. Big amounts of money were rolled and fortunes were made or destroyed depending on luck. Due to the fact that Constanta is a port city, many of those unlucky players decided to commit suicide by jumping straight in the sea. In order to be accepted in the casino, you had to wear the latest trend in fashion.

The last renovation was done in 1988. The building is now abandoned, waiting for someone to give a hand and put it to use. However, the authorities do not care about it and they don’t intend to use it. The architecture is amazing, if you don’t believe me just check the images below.

Looks pretty fancy, more fancy than my local theater, it's crazy to think such beauty is being wasted, they could at least use it for a movie or something.

Yeah, I agree. :(

It looks amazing razvan -stanciu.

Thanks, glad you liked it :)

WOW! I loved Romania. I visited the country a few years ago and the food, the people and the buildings are amazing, not to mention how green it is.

Do you know if this casino can be visited?

Hey! Glad to hear you enjoyed your time in Romania. The casino is not officially open for public, but the guards won't mind if you ask them to let you in to take some pictures.

Nice idea! I love urban exploration too. Btw... I think the HDR effect kinda ruin the eerie mood of this place. Need more bluish and gloomy tone.

Thanks for your feedback. The photos were made by my friend, Cristian Lipovan, a passionate photographer from Cluj-Napoca.

why is it abdomened ?

The casino was bombed during war on 20 August, 1916. It was then an improvised hospital for german troops. Since then, it is passed from one authority to another, no one willing to take care of it.

So who owns the place? Is it for sale?

There is a dispute going on for the ownership of the place. Several parties are involved, most of them being authorities and institutions.

Very beautiful inside :)

Yes, indeed. Thanks!

THAT I know about...and I do want to visit some day... I met a singer here in Denmark, Greek from Rhodes, that in the 60s was working there, and it was a place full of life... :/
