La Palma #10: Santa Cruz and Laurel forest [EN/GER]

Santa Cruz is the capital of La Palma and has about 15,600 inhabitants.
It was founded in 1493 and is actually a quite old city. In the 16th century, it had a great importance for world trade, mainly because of the port, which at the time was the third largest in Europe.

Today, Santa Cruz is best known for its balconies full of flowers. These balconies are typical for the Canaries and built from local pine wood.

What a nice view along the sidewalk!
We have only two days of vacation left on the island now (time goes by so quickly!) and so, we visit the capital for half a day.
Day10_4.jpg

The narrow streets and colorful houses invite you for a walk. And so, we stroll through the capital and enjoy the atmosphere.

After a coffee and a delicious snack, we continue. This time, we head north to the laurel forest Los Tilos.

The forest is declared as UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1983 – it houses rare bird species.
Day10_8.jpg

We have a short hike to a waterfall on the program.
Unfortunately, we get to know now that the waterfall is dried up and in consequence, we won’t see anything of it.
Even if everything around us looks quite tropical, the dried riverbeds show us how much the nature is lacking water.

After exploring the mighty forest for a while, we head back home.
In our villa, we have a nice barbecue-party and enjoy the almost last day of holiday on the island.

Day10_3.jpg
