Geckos of South Africa

in photography •  8 years ago

South Africa has 70 recognized species of geckos. The largest genera being Pachydactylus(Pachy= thick - Dactyl=toed - Thick toed geckos). Geckos occupy the entire country, but diversity is greatest in areas providing rocky-substrates. Terrestrial geckos occur from coastal sands to the bushveld and in some cases in seasonally flooded esturaine vegetation.

Below are just some of my images to share

Common Barking Gecko - Ptenopus garrulus

Giant Ground Gecko - Chondrodactylus anguilifer

Striped leaf-toed gecko - Goggia lineata

Austens dune gecko - Pachydactylus austeni

Amoenas thick toed gecko - Pachydactylus amoenus

Richtersveld thick toed gecko - Pachydactylus carinatus

Haackes thick toed gecko - Pachydactylus haackei

Velvet Gecko - Homopholis wahlbergii

Spotted Dwarf gecko - Lygodactylus occelatus

There are some awesome geckos there. I use to have pet geckos when I lived in RSA, they were leopard geckos though.

"They have numerous microscopic hooks that catch in the slightest irregularities, even those in the surface of glass, and so a gecko can cling to all but the most highly polished surfaces" (The International Wildlife Encyclopedia). Thank you for sharing . good photo
