The Danish artist Wilhelm Hammershoi (Hammershoi, 1864 - 1916) was the author of quiet interiors and landscapes painted in muted colors, mostly gray, and in his refined style there was something mysterious, reminiscent of Dutch artists of the 17th century such as Jan Vermeer and Peter de Hoh. Some compositions are very calm in mood, in others, on the contrary, a disturbing and even tragic note is heard, but in all there is restraint inherent in Scandinavian painting. The art of Hammershoe has the quality of timelessness and at the same time appears as a kind of nostalgic flight into the past. The artist was very revered by his contemporaries, although he had to wait for a long time to recognize his work.
