The Rich robbing the poor

The poor being robbed

This is a short story of a case where the rich robbed the poor. Both the image above and below is of a holiday resort in Brenton South Africa, where my kids and I camped for many years. In fact I have black and white photos, where I can barely walk when my parents, my siblings and I came on vacation to the same place.

As you can see it is was a very neat resort with wonderful big trees under which you could set up your tent or park your caravan.

This holiday resort was situated next to the Knysna lake, which gave the whole place a very relaxing and picturesque atmosphere. You could walk next to the lake in the evenings or sit next to the water during sunset, sipping on a nice glass of wine. The kids could play in safety and enjoyed each others company.

Here I taught my kids to take out octopus or prawns as bait. (The same that my father taught us as kids years before.)

I taught them to fish. We enjoyed quality family time together on numerous holidays in each others company and spending time together as a family.

But that was then and this is now.......

It all came to an end. This beautiful place was sold to a real estate developer, who closed the holiday resort and started to develop a security estate in its place.

Property prices are out of this world and out of reach for the normal people who used to go on vacation there.

We won't be able to enjoy this any longer...... now it will only be for the supper rich.

Hello @rynow,

I also use to go to Knysna with my family every year. To me Knysna is the most amazing and beautiful place I have ever been to!

It is a place where memories are made and where families get to enjoy themselves and each other.

It is sad that your family tradition, of going there every year, had to stop because of estate developers.

A big and expensive house will never have the same relaxing feeling as a tent next to the lake.

Hope you and your family will find a new special vacation destination where you can make new memories.

My Grandparents lived in Knysna, and know it well from three decades ago. Different place.

Thank you for the reply and the vote. Yes the once peaceful is now very busy town, with traffic jams etc.

Awesome pics, great story, would be realy sad to loose such a special place.

INdeed fills me with sadness. Was in Knysna two years ago and can not believe what the place has become. In my mind, there is to many people .. that is at the core of ALL our problems. In fact our very economy, capitalism at its heart, promotes making more people. The only government that got control of this is China, but nooo ... we want our freedom and liberties so we can properly screw the place up. Anyway, enough of that. Thanks for the pics, took me back when I too gathered bait and fished on the lagoon.

It's very sad. This happens in Portugal too, all the best places that I used to enjoy in my youth are now paid for. :(

Thank you @jamielefay for the reply. I have never been to Portugal, but would love to visit some time.

Great story Ryno and just as I experienced it. After Knysna I think Jongensfontein is a great second best to keep on camping. Very nice municipal caravan camp at great rates and still relatively small number of visitors.
