Japan in pictures - Part 1 : Tokyo 2/3

Edo Castle (Edo-jo) was the home castle of the line of Tokugawa shoguns who ran the Edo government which ruled Japan for roughly 260 years (from the beginning of the 17th century until 1867). It was originally built in 1457 by the daimyo Ota Dokan, who was also well-known as a poet. As it was the castle of the founding shogun of the Edo government (Tokugawa Ieyasu), it became the building that symbolized the prestige of successive shoguns, and was also the center of political power. It was the largest castle in Japan in those days, with the inner compound measuring roughly 8 km in diameter, and the outer compound measuring around 16 km. The castle donjon with a five-tiered facade was an enormously high building with a stone wall measuring 51.5 m from ground level. This was destroyed, however, in the great fire of 1657. It is currently the Imperial Palace of the Emperor of Japan.

A bokken is a Japanese wooden sword used for training. It is usually the size and shape of a katana, but is sometimes shaped like other swords. I was lucky enough and assist to a competition in Tokyo :

Nihonbashi is a business district of Chūō, Tokyo, Japan which grew up around the bridge of the same name which has linked two sides of the Nihonbashi River at this site since the 17th century. The first wooden bridge was completed in 1603. The current bridge designed by Tsumaki Yorinaka was constructed of stone on a steel frame dates from 1911. The district covers a large area to the north and east of the bridge, reaching Akihabara to the north and the Sumida River to the east. Ōtemachi is to the west and Yaesu and Ginza to the south.

Excellent photos. And I've been in Japan - only once in 2013

Thanks :)
Where have you been in Japan ?

Of course in Tokyo )

I've have been only in Tokyo and Kyoto so far but I am looking forward to visit more of this wonderful country :)

Haven't been in Japan yet, but your pictures look amazing!!

Thank you :) You definitely have to go, it's an amazing country and people are really nice.

Nice pictures ! I've been in Japan last octobre but only rain (20 days in Japan, 17 days of rain) so my pictures are not so shinny !
I loved the mix between modern and traditional. Japanese has the ability to take the best of the two worlds and make there own.

Thanks :) I've been in July in Japan so I had a pretty good weather. But I think the best time is in spring to see the cherry trees.
That's so true the mix is really incredible. Have you been in Tokyo only or have you traveled a bit around?

I loved your photos, i wish you would of wrote your own descriptive text at the beginning instead of copy pasting :/
still nice post!

Thanks :) Ahah yes, I'm not a bad photographer but a poor writer though!

Built in the 1400s and looks as fresh as yesterday. I dont know how the Japanese do it.

That's true :) everything is so clean there, even in such a big city like Tokyo.
