The white stork (Ciconia ciconia) is a very noticeable and identifiable bird because of its imposing size and unique features. It is native to Europe, some parts of Africa, and Western Asia where it can be easily distinguished by its white feathers, black tipped wings, as well as long red legs and bill. This bird stands between 100-115 cm tall with a wingspan that ranges from 155-215 cm, hence making it one of the largest storks.
White storks are migratory birds that travel from Europe breeding grounds all the way to African wintering grounds. They are also known for their remarkable migration that covers over 10,000 kilometers. These birds create large nests that they occupy year in year out which are often constructed on high structures like chimneys or utility poles. These nests are made up of different materials including twigs, straw or even manmade waste.
White storks have feeding habits which involve eating mostly meat such as insects, small mammals, amphibians and reptiles. Their method of hunting involves standing still until prey comes within striking range.
In different regions the white stork has significant cultural value representing fertility and new beginnings. Birdwatchers and naturalists alike continue to be amazed by their elegant presence and magnificent migratory patterns across the globe.
