Intimate Conceptual Photography

My work has been facing many stages, so as my life. I started photography in my late 20's , after I have become a mother, a wife, a housekeeper and a trainer of my compulsive shy dog. I thought I had so much to say and entered the artistic world with a lot of enthusiasm but soon after that I realized my originality has been already approached by other artists, not years ago, but decades ago. I had no artistic background before I first attended the art classes, I have been raised in the good common sense of doing things with a purpose. Art was purposeless, so it was for the easy ones, for the ones who are not able to have a career or have a steady life. I grew up with this mentality and the people around me grew up with this mentality. So my first approach was denial. I wanted to break these rules. The consequence was that I found myself in disorientation, trying so 3.jpghard to tell so many things through my art, but reaching to tell so little. So I grew up a little more, my little daughter grew up a little more and I started to photograph without wanting to make the statement that I imagine I would. I made peace with the world around me and I made peace with myself. Of course that I am not changing the polarity of the planet with my works, but what if I do ? What if there is a little tiny world made up of a second when someone sees a picture of mine and makes him feel good. Or bad. Or anyhow. For that little sparkle I continued to take pictures. Of things and people and situations around me. I am not a photojournalist and I do not take snapshots, I am far from the "real reality", because that is where I wanted to be from the first place. So I reinterpret what I see in my pictures, like in a dream.

This picture is the one I considered to be the most representative out of a series of 5 works. It is inspired by a close lady friend of mine who has made all the right decisions in her life but ended up in all the wrong situations someone can imagine. It speaks about freedom and captivity as a unitary concept, without being able to establish any boundaries, as we are used to think. I wanted the picture also to tell a story about the background of the individual, the environment that creates and sets him as a winner or as a looser. This environment is often quite blank, without a certain personality, but with the ability of deciding one's fate. I would add Virginia Wolf's shout to this picture if I would need to hear it scream.

Giraffe and Sparrow is perhaps one of my most descriptive pictures of a highly conceptualized problem: what feels to be free but isn't and what doesn't feel to be free, but is ? My purpose was to combine dynamism and static elements in the same composition, with a straight perspective over the duality (plurality, actually) of things. I was reading Maria Erich Remarque - Arc de Triumph and life hit me while I was living it. Like it does with all of us.
