Cats in a Cage

in photography •  7 years ago

After my recent posts talking about my feeling regarding animals in zoo's I'd like touch on the subject once again.

Seeing large cats in cages is a very hard to see, as I grew up I watched tons and tons of nature shows, since I live in Canada the most played shows were Nature, David Suzuki's The Nature of Things, and Lorne Green's Wilderness. All of these shaped my childhood and helped me become the ocean and animal lover that I am today.

As I stated in earlier posts seeing African/Tropical animals in the snow is very strange, please don't get me wrong I realize that certain Tiger species that live in Asia do reside in snowy areas. But for large tigers that are in cages in the snow in Canada is weird.

The more I think the more and more I feel conflicted about zoo's and what they are and what good they really provide. I must say I did have someone comment on my post about Gorilla's who is a zoo keeper and I really appreciated their comments and perspective.

I think its really important to have dialogue about these issues.

Thanks for reading.

beautiful shots!

Consider that places that are very arid often get quite cold at night. It snowed in the Sahara

I grew up on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom; I was transfixed to the screen for the short time my mother allowed it ;) I've also enjoyed all the shows you've mentioned too!

I also feel your conflict :( Exposure to animals can awaken something in a child, and not all families can afford to see the real thing in its natural habitat. Though many of us neglect our own back yards, when it comes to nature discovery. It's easy to take that which is all around us for granted :(

Every animal should be kept in an environment or area that mirrors its natural habitat, except the animal was raised in another area from birth. Probably the tiger was raised in snowy area from birth.
Thought provoking post, thanks for sharing

Hate this man. Hate the zoos, hate the captivity for fun. Hate the carnivals. Humankind is so arrogant. Always think of themselves and never mind of any other creature and its nature. Damn.

zoos are seldom just "for fun" they are generally involved in both research and conservation, the "zoo" near me is all rescued animals that were either injured or former pets. Have you been to one recently?

No, i rathet not. Because i just don't understand the concept and benefit of held captive to lions, camels, monkeys etc. They don't under danger of extinction. Yes, i love them to save the species nearly extinct because they have to. We made those animals to extinct afterall! As regards to research part, i don't believe researchers need to captive animal for this. No. They may travel their habitat and i bet get even more accurate data about them in there.

Maybe if you went to one you could ask the zoologists those questions, you know, those folks who have dedicated their lives and careers to caring for and studying animals.

so sad...

hate him so much

someone on the other post suggested that it would have been better for you to go on safari to see that, why didn't you just go on safari?

I think that's a complicated issue, I believe I remember the comment from that post that you're talking about. I would agree with you in general. The other side of the coin is that not everybody has the money time Etc to be able to go on Safari to see these animals. I'm not saying that that justifies it. Just that it's complicated, because while I'm not a fan of zoos in general and they do give me conflicted feelings as well, I do see how they can have some value :/ :/

For me, to see any animal in a cage is unnatural. Ether wild or domesticated. These animals would roam for miles now they sit and pace for the amusement of man.

Wow theyre so beautiful!

It is heartbreaking and I feel that when we view animals as inferior to humans this is the outcome. Until we acknowledge their lives as cherished as ours, I am not sure this will end. Thank you for sharing.

#speciesism, until we as a species recognize that the other animals on this planet are here with us and not for us this will continue.

Exactly! Specisism won`t give us anything good for the future!

In my view every living being on this planet have a right to live free but in case of the big cats we should be cautious to keep them free.

Sir your doning a great job

Great post. I feel the same way, makes me sick when I see animals in a zoo.

I agree with you in this subject!

Wild tigers are very different from tigers in the zoo

Please expand.

They look great and very powerful.

I am the first time on steemit blog, please give freedom in my comment! Do not back off before the fight. I see the privilege of steemit @locer76

Beutiful pic =)

spectacular the photos of the tigers. you have a lot of talent, thank you for giving it to the community of stem

Tiger photography is charming ..It is amazing post .Thanks sharing this post

Hello greetings from Venezuela the animals are the most beautiful beings, that help a good ecosystem and we humans strive to mistreat, kill and expose them in exits in ways of extinction

Exactly. These animals belong in the wild. Humans are the culprits for their declined in numbers.

Most types of tigers live in tropical climates except the Siberian tiger and Chinese i think, but it does not close the possibility that they can't adapt due to the new environment
I think they are okay as long as they are kept well in their new habitat. I think it is better for tigers to breed in their new habitat like the example above, considering the tiger population in asia every day decreases drastically and it can prevent from the wild hunting

the cats are amazing but i wish they were free and in the wild where they belong!

Agree

Tigers and snow? How does that work? :/

I also still think it's the weirdest thing that there is snow. It was the photo that intrigued me most in your last post about it. I also made some photos in the zoo and thus had to think about this issue when I wrote the article. Thanks for sharing your perspective on it.

Sometimes i imagine how humans treating animals that way by confining them in a zoo will feel if they are treated that way. Why will some humans decide to change their natural habitat, all because of their selfish desires. I think any body interested in seeing them should view it from the TV e.g NGW or take the bold step by going to their habitat (following legal protocols and also acquiring needed safety measures ). Scott photo thanks for sharing similar views.

this is good ..loved he post

Beautiful animals. I am sometimes torn between keeping animals in zoo, or leaving them to be free.

I really wanna have tiger in my house. That would be awesome.

Big cats are so great. I love Bengals, but While Tigers and Puma especially.

this is cool.

Life is better when all the animals are in their natural environment.
thanks for sharing.

Yes. we need to find any way out from this issue.
Recently in Korea, the zoo has closed and only two big and around 10 small are left. Whenever I 've been there, I have a very bad feeling and sometimes I thought the more zoo need to be closed, if the animals were treated like that in the poor condition. Today, I heard one specie of Asian Rhino will be dead soon and it's the last female.
I also don't know the way out but love to share this issue. Thanks,

I am a lover of nature, sometimes it is painful to see these animals in captivity only because of the destructive capacity of man, but I also think that the rest of visitors like us, because we do not really have much responsibility in this.

So damn true. Its so inhuman to keep wild animals locked in to cages just to be an attraction. They need to be in their natural environment!

no animal should be in captivity, these animals are far from their true home of their nature is very sad, I have seen animals in zoos that look very sad, some seem to have gone mad, I think that an animal is not only healthy because it looks physically healthy, are beings who feel and suffer unfortunately human beings are very selfish and backward on these issues.

I have never liked zoos, or any animals in cages. :(

There are certain zoos in the world that should be shutdown due to animal welfare and they are just profiting from the visitors - these are what I call 'circus' zoos, yet some zoos are doing 'good' in terms of educating the young and researching. Animals should be in similar environments to their own natural habitat and should be given a lot of space to move around, but unless you are at a safari park style zoo, this wouldn't happen.
Btw, @scottdphoto, great post and photos.

Good

Beautiful animals. They don't belong in cage.

Back in my childhood I was very impressed by the tricks animals used to do at Zoos or Circus. Growing up I realized that they are tread bad, theyre harmedtill they learn to make them. Thats why nowadays Im an animal lover like you.

Completely agree... thanks for sharing

Agree with you, thanks for sharing...

animal photography is very surprising, they are unpredictable beings that will never do what we ask them. In these photos, the animal that is perfect in the rule of the thirds, looks challenging ...

This is a very important subject and Im glad to see people are concerned about it.Im against any form of animal exploatation, zoos included..

Big cats, the wild of wild. The epitome of nature's untamability. Put in a cage. I couldn't agree more! It truly is hard to see something so majestic prowling around endlessly in it's cage.

Thanks for the photos and thoughts.

True !

Isn't there a world body that takes care about these animals

These shots are tragically beautiful. The tradegy lies in these gorgeous animals being trapped in a tiny cell. I am pretty sure most people feel conflicted about zoo and captive wild animals.

In an ideal world we would live with our natural world so wild animals can thrive. Hopefully we will get to that point before it's too late.
