Crimson in the Tide

The crimson anemone might look like a plant, but it is a marine animal related to coral and jellyfish. They have a bulbous shape, with venomous, stinging tentacles at the top surrounding their mouths.

Crimson anemones (Cribrinopsis fernaldi) are a sea anemone native to the Pacific Ocean off the northwestern coast of North America. It is also known as the chevron-tentacle anemone, snakelock anemone, and the Fernald brooding anemone. This is a large anemone species that vary in colour from red to orange and even white. The long tentacles are covered with dark horizontal lines. This anemone's base can be up to to 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter and around 25 cm (10 inches) high.

Regularly found living past their 60s, crimson anemones are particularly interesting from a scientific perspective because they have the potential to live forever because of their ability to regenerate every part of their bodies and because their cells don't mutate over time.
