Rockfish 101 - Vermilion Rockfish

in photography •  7 years ago

Sebastes miniatus is a species of rockfish known by the common name Vermilion Rockfish. Other names may also be Vermilion Seaperch, Red Snapper, and Red Rock Cod. It is native to the waters of the Pacific Ocean off western North America from Baja California to Vancouver Island.

The colour of Vermilions vary greatly depending on its age and where it is living. Bright red in colour for the most part and covered with black and grey mottling on its side and back.

These are very pretty fish and excellent subjects for photography. Similar to other rockfish such as Canary and Brown Rockfish they tend not to shy away from divers especially the older Vermilions you may encounter. These fish can live at great depths but most reside within recreational limits above 40 meters (130 ft.)

As with all rockfish be patient and take your time when looking to compose a shot, let them come to you.

Cute pictures. Are they edible or poisonus @scootdphoto?

Rockfish are delicious. It's too bad that they are so often caught as bycatch and have a very high mortality rate in commercial fisheries, since they are often brought up quickly from around 100 fathom depths.

My fav is the third picture , so beautiful and i like the harmony of its colours <3

I'm a huge fan of underwater photography, but never had the opportunity to do it. Great work 👌

What a fantastic picture, i am big fan of you by way, taking picture underwater in 3d dimension definitely differ from above.

That patterning is really lovely, you could make a screen background just out of that colour and texture combo!

Such a pretty, vibrant colour...the underwater snaps look fab! Thumbs up!

Mother nature is amazing. But I'm getting sad when I think about the fact what we are doing to the sea life with all the plastic, garbage and chemicals that land in the sea. Nevertheless, thank you for sharing :)

Indeed it is @gentlehuman hence we need to conserve it and educate people of its beauty by sharing our post and beautiful pictures to the world
