The fletcher-class destroyer now rests easy on the mighty Mississippi River, but this old ship served in battle for the United States from 1943 - 1964, aiding the U.S. military in both the World War II and Korean War efforts. I visited the Kidd many times as a child, viewing it simply as a big boat that wasn't too far from my home. Viewing it as an adult brings up new feelings and curiosities about the ship and the soldiers who stood on it's deck during battle. The sites they must have seen. The distances they traveled. The joy and fear they felt. The memories they both cherish and are haunted by. It remains one of my favorite pieces of Baton Rouge, the city that I will always call home.
